Re: Jamesian blog
@huevon: I think I can see where you are coming from. All I'm really saying is that the stat where Camby, Amare, and Paul were in the top 15 (I believe it was WS/48), isn't a reflection of the players greatness. And you don't seem to necessarily refute that point. Now I suppose you can throw the sta...

Re: Jamesian blog
I'm sorry, because of the time delay between my posts I probably forgot a lot of the context of the debate. I was responding mostly to some chart that had CP3, Amare and Camby listed among the all-time win shares for individual seasons (I think). I believe it was Win Shares per 48 minutes. I don't k...

Re: Jamesian blog
many consider jordan to be the greatest SG to ever play the game, possibly the greatest player period. others may consider magic, bird, chamberlain, or russell the greatest player ever, but they played different positions than jordan did... paul certainly has a chance to be one of the greatest PGs ...

Re: Jamesian blog
A perplexing comment, since Chris Paul at his peak is better than many of Jordan's seasons. I haven't completely looked into the science behind win shares. I imagine it's some measure of how many "wins" a player was worth for their team. And I can respect such a measure because they don't...

Re: Jamesian blog
I can respect the theory behind statistics like wins-shared. But when you look at a list that has Marcus Camby, Chris Paul and Amare Stoudimire both in the top 15 ALL TIME... I really have to wonder what they are measuring.

Re: Rebuild or Retool Portland's Path
I'm not sure what they actually mean by answer. Is he going to be the next Chris Paul or Deron Williams? I doubt it personally. So if that's what they are expecting by signing the guy, they will be disappointed IMO. I'm a Rockets fan though, so I can say a few things about what his accomplishments w...

Re: News about Magic Metric
Really good points. I don't think it is possible to use the system in the NBA, because if you are being made millions of dollars for your coaching judgment, how can you toss all of that out and use a predefined rotation? Someone will call for your head. But we seemed to win a lot more games, so it ...

Re: News about Magic Metric
I like the idea of a rotation system and I think the idea works out a lot better at the amateur level. 1) because there isn't as much a pressure to succeed but sometimes there is pressure from players that think they deserve more playing time or that the system isn't fair. Creating a system like thi...

Re: 201-2012 NBA Player ratings
Wow... very interesting paper. I haven't quite finished with it yet and I do have doubts about the rotation system transitioning to the NBA (perhaps the regular season but probably not the playoffs), but it's certainly a different perspective on rotations. I wonder if you could look at a team like t...

Re: NBA Ref Watch
...We've all heard of the myth that stars get more calls than regular players do... Isn't a myth a story that actually isn't true? Is this ^^ known to be a myth? Players coming off the bench seem to get more fouls per minute than they do as starters. Is there a good reason for this? Do they play di...

Re: Total TO or "regular" TO?
Take your blocked shot, whoever gets the team rebound after the block either stays in or gains possession, so it's kind of important who gets it. I haven't completely looked into this, but I imagine if a single person recovers the ball after a shot was blocked it would theoretically record a reboun...

Re: NBA Ref Watch
It's certainly not a waste of time to compile data on bad calls. But what kind of sucks about the NBA is how inconsistant calls seem to be. From game to game, some crews call things tighter or looser than others. It might have to do with what refs are calling the game or perhaps it has to do with th...

Total TO or "regular" TO?
I'm trying to build a stats program that parses through play by play data and calculates the box scores. I don't need programming help. The issue I have is determining if I want "Total TO" or just TO. According to the play by play data I have and box scores from NBA.com, there is a differe...

Re: Scoring decline and possible NBA response
I think it's all a product of how they are calling certain things now. Evans joked about Kevin Martin not getting to the free throw line, but it's absolutely true. They aren't calling the foul he used to get where he would drive to the basket, lean into a player and get free throws. I imagine it's k...

Re: Help managing data in Excel
I have kind of the same question. I've been trying to look up an easy way to pull box scores from a website (say, ESPN). You guys say Access is a good way to do it but I'm not that familiar with that program... is there like a good tutorial that explains how to pull data from a website and put it in...
