Re: How many teams have a 10+% chance to win title next seas
Sharps aren't going to tie up their bankroll and force themselves to fade injuries/trades/signings for ten months. All the teams will probably be available at better prices at some point in the season anyway. I'd say MIA, IND, HOU, OKC, and SAS all have a 10+% chance of winning the title at this (ve...

Re: Dallas strategy- appropriate or not?
Cuban has repeatedly said they want Dirk to retire a Mav, and it's never been their MO to rebuild through the draft, so their ability to do a full rebuild seems stalled until Dirk retires (unless of course he re-signs very cheaply and is okay playing on a lottery team). While they should probably ha...

Re: Top values on new metric called "Individual Player Value
I believe IPV does use priors and an aging curve with their numbers, but only +/- for the defensive side of things. Briefly looking over the two different sets of data, it seems RAPM values interior defenders more than IPV, while IPV rates big men more favorably on offense. Does either metric seem p...

Re: Brad Stevens- analytic coach. The next level of applicat
I'm assuming the fact Rivers was somewhat hesitant to lean on advanced stats and Stevens is so stats-friendly is a sign we'll be seeing a lot more evidence of the Celtics' front office (and Zarren's in particular) use of analytics. I'd expect the same, maybe to a lesser degree, from Memphis. I'd def...

Re: Stats Database
Some SQL servers are free, like this one from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/web/platform/database.aspx
You also might want to try MongoDB, which is open-sourced. I believe it's what Evan Z uses for NBA Wowy.

Re: What's the best publicly available defensive metric?
While Synergy is an awesome resource (albeit with a frustrating interface, for their public version at least) I'd caution putting too much stock in the PPP they assign to defenders against different play types. The data doesn't account for match-ups. A lot of players that are "hidden" on D...
