"Success come from better data, not better analysis" D Morey

Daryl Morey recently made this argument in an article for Business Insider: http://www.businessinsider.com/success-comes-from-better-data-not-better-analysis-2011-8 Agree or disagree? I see where he's coming from, but would argue that the bottleneck in terms of better measuring player productivity i...

Re: Players mislabeled as "busts?" Who am I missing?

All great points and I appreciate all the feedback. I wanted to be more clear about quantifying what a "bust" was, but defining a quantifiable measure turned into a fool's errand. Additionally, I agree with the ROI sentiment, but I think the point I was making (and should have done a bette...

Players mislabeled as "busts?" Who am I missing?

I just compiled a list of a few players who have been labeled as "busts" or disappointments despite putting up some pretty damn good seasons simply because they were drafted early. My list with my explanations are here: http://lifeisapeachbasket.blogspot.com/2014/03/7-busts-who-are-better-...

Re: If Cavs want to win a ring, quickest route is trading Ky

Faried is not exactly the poster child for high productivity and low market value (which, I guess, is what you're shooting for given your original post) with his -1.9 D-RAPM, ranking him 35th worst on D You're totally right that Faried's defense is lacking (to say the least) and that he's likely no...

Re: If Cavs want to win a ring, quickest route is trading Ky

GM's have staffs of scouts and analysts who study this stuff for a living. It's unlikely any of them are told to "get a sexy name, even if we have to give up more than we're getting". Agreed no one (except maybe the Knicks/Nets) trade for players b/c of cachet and no one is trading more f...

Re: If Cavs want to win a ring, quickest route is trading Ky

I can imagine a lot of teams who would be more than willing to give productive pieces up for Irving since he's a young prolific scorer with a high Q-score who is, for lack of a better term, a sexy name. For instance, if I'm the Cavs I'm calling Denver and offering Kyrie for Lawson + Manimal. Who say...

Re: If Cavs want to win a ring, quickest route is trading Ky

Totally agree there are additional variables to take into account, but I think most folks are missing the forest for the trees here: he's a good, young player, but he's nowhere near a top-10 talent at the moment and never will be. Is he a valuable player? Sure. But IMO, he's more valuable as a trade...

If Cavs want to win a ring, quickest route is trading Kyrie

Kyrie Irving is a good player and could become great, but he's no superstar and his market value > productivity. If the Cavs want to win a ring, they should leverage their best asset and trade him for more valuable pieces while his stock is soaring: http://lifeisapeachbasket.blogspot.com/2014/02/sim...

Carmelo Anthony's Best Season Ever?

If Carmelo Anthony's scoring isn't much improved and his team is losing, how is this his best season ever (by far)?

Appreciate any feedback!
