National Championship
4 Michigan/1 Louisville FOUL, STALL, SLOPPY, LACKED (just think – a week from now, we won’t remember a single specific play from this incredible game; this game won’t have the visual legacy it deserves), PREDICTABLE (in this game, anything was possible – except for Michigan having any chance to overcome a four-point deficit in the final minute, of course!), CLOCK, SILLY (editors, get to work – we don’t need a meaningless Michigan halfcourt airball spoiling the Louisville reaction shots at the end of the game), BONUS, END (and it’s official: exactly ZERO NCAA tournament games ended with a meaningful made basket)

Just to play a bit of devil's advocate here, wouldn't it take a little something away if every game ends on a made basket? Right now, a buzzer beater to win is pretty much the most exciting thing in the game. I think part of that is due to the rarity. If every close game ends with a 'buzzer beater', is it going to become too common and take some of the excitement away?

Also, as a Michigan fan, I have plenty of visuals from the game. Sadly, most of them are of inconsistent reffing (both ways), and there are no good ones from the end of the game.

Of course it would. Add to that that the clock is what makes a buzzer beater truly exciting. If there is no clock, much of the tension of a game-winning shot is lost. If this particular game-winning shot doesn't go in, that's OK, because the game's not over.

There are 2 types of "buzzer beater" FG which are exciting:
1 - beating the end-of-half clock
2 - beating the shot clock

If you barely beat the shot clock AND win the game, that's pretty exciting.
If you're 2 points from winning the game (in this proposed format), the other team is going to put all kinds of effort into stopping you. This may well lead to frequent last-second (shot clock) attempts.

And you still will have games that end at the FT line. What you wouldn't have are endings in which the trailing team is inbounding, or rebounding, with a couple seconds in which to score. While it occasionally happens that a team wins a game on such a possession, it's exceedingly rare, and mostly just a frustration.

Except perhaps for advertisers.

If the game clock has any effect on a particular play, it’s only that it forces a team to attempt a shot that’s less than their best – a shot so unfavorable that they (quite literally) wouldn’t think of attempting it at any other time in the game. This does nothing but TAKE AWAY tension at the end of a game. Under a hybrid format, every team always gets to take its best shot.

As for a tie game, if a team misses a buzzer beater under the current format, it means they get to take a breather and get ready for five more minutes of play. If a team misses a potential walk-off shot in a tie game under a hybrid format, it means they better get back on defense and prevent their opponent from winning the game in a matter of seconds. Another upgrade.

It’s a matter of taste, but I think the excitement at the end of games (at that moment and in retrospect) would be enhanced by the guarantee of a walk-off basket, and I don’t think it would ever get old. Even in a game decided by, say, 15 points, I still think a walk-off basket would send teammates running onto the court to celebrate with the shooter, rather than strolling over to the handshake line (which we often see currently in games decided by just four points!). And while One Shining Moment is great as it is, it would be pretty cool to see a montage of the 67 game-ending baskets.

Has anyone ever suggested that tennis would be better with a clock? Just stop playing after a certain time?
In playground basketball -- no clock -- we always played that you have to win by 2 baskets. In that way, it was like tennis: You might have a potential game-winning shot, but if you miss it and the other team scores, you haven't lost the game.

This is like the "deuce" situation in tennis. Whoever scores twice in a row has won the game.
In basketball, with 1, 2, or 3 point possessions, you might say that a team must win by 2 pts, or 3. That creates a pseudo overtime, when it's close.

It's not difficult for players to know that they need to score 3, or prevent the 3, or whatever. A whole bunch of new strategies would appear.

Apologies for introducing this complication.

This is an intriguing idea. It might reduce the possibility of sudden-death basketball, but it introduces a way to extend tight games (like a Buffalo Wild Wings commercial!), while still guaranteeing a thrilling finish (an upgrade from multiple-overtime games under the current format, which so often end anticlimactically).

Some observations from the first round of the NBA Playoffs:
-As compared to NCAA basketball, we see repeated and deliberate fouling at the end of far fewer NBA games. The shorter shot clock plays a big role in this, but so does a pervasive willingness to concede games when facing a moderate deficit (not only do we see trailing teams elect not to foul when on defense, but we often see them elect not to attempt a shot on their final possession, casually dribbling out the clock instead)
-I’ve never liked the gimmicky rule that allows teams to advance the ball after a timeout. This rule wouldn’t necessarily be eliminated as part of a hybrid format, but its advantageous effect would be diminished
-Networks are having an impossible time adhering to their self-imposed 150-minute window. A hybrid format would probably bring about the same variance in game length as regulation games do currently, but far less variance as compared to all games currently (because overtime would be obsolete)
-My favored format for NCAA basketball is an untimed portion that follows the first stoppage that occurs after at least 16 minutes have elapsed in the second half, and requires the leading team to score seven points. I’m still not exactly sure what juncture/scoring requirement would be best for the untimed portion of NBA games, but the intent (as with the format for NCAA basketball) should be to keep scoring rate and game length within a familiar range

Game 4 STALL, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, DEAD, BORE, SILLY (After San Antonio willingly took a shot clock violation on final possession, refs had to clear everyone from court so ball could be inbounded for less than one second), SUBDUED, MISLEADING, TIME, ANTICLIMACTIC, END (Meaningful possession to end 4th: Jarrett Jack fallaway jumper that barely drew rim)
Game 5 STALL, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, END
Game 6 FOUL, STALL, SLOPPY, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, DEAD, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, ROLL, END

Conference Finals

3 Indiana/1 Miami
Game 1 FOUL, STALL, SLOPPY, CLOCK, DEAD, TIME, BONUS
Meaningful possession to end 4th: Ray Allen three-point attempt hits side of backboard
Meaningful possession to end OT: Lebron James made lay-up (Now THAT was a game! Late lead changes and an end that coincided with a meaningful made basket? What a concept! The only thing that seemed out of place were the refs yelling “Wait everybody! Stop celebrating!” or something to that effect, so they could conduct a clock review)
Game 2 FOUL, STALL, SLOPPY, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, DEAD (13 minutes to play final 1:44), BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, ROLL, END
Game 3 STALL, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, END
Game 4 FOUL, STALL, SLOPPY, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, DEAD (19 minutes for final 2:50), BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, MISLEADING, END
Game 5 STALL, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, END
Game 6 STALL, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY (trailing team dribbling out clock), SUBDUED, END
Game 7 STALL, CONCEDE, UNCONTESTED, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, END

5 Memphis/2 San Antonio
Game 1 STALL, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY, END
Game 2 FOUL, STALL, SLOPPY, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, DEAD, BORE, SUBDUED, TIME, ANTICLIMACTIC, BONUS, END
Meaningful attempt to end 4th: Tim Duncan wrong-direction turnaround jumper that failed to hit rim
Game 3 STALL, SLOPPY, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, DEAD, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, ROLL, MISLEADING, TIME, ANTICLIMACTIC, END
Meaningful possession to end 4th: Mike Conley running lay-up that failed to draw rim
Game 4 STALL, SLOPPY, CONCEDE, LACKED, PREDICTABLE, BORE, SILLY, SUBDUED, ROLL, PILE (San Antonio passed up a wide open lay-up so as not to pile on), END
