The two most improved lists are about 2 to 1 in favor of younger guys. The biggest decline lists are closer to half and half.

If Player A improves his FT% from .600 to .800, and he's 8/10 on the year, he's gained 2 points with his FT% improvement.
If Player B improves from .600 to .700, and he's 70/100, he's gained 10 points from his FT improvement.

I would say player B has improved his FT shooting more. There's little improvement from shooting "better" but never getting any shots: It doesn't improve the team.

Similarly, a player's per-minute improvement matters less if he isn't doing it for many minutes. If you're measuring improved point-differential or wins per minute, multiply that by the minutes played, and you have the increase in contribution.

How did Andray Blatche of the Nets go from nowhere on the list to the top, in under 3 weeks?
In November, playing 18 mpg off the bench, he shot .448 on FG, averaged 9.4 pts, 5.7 Reb
In December, he's started all 6 games, shooting .568 FG, avg 29 minutes, 18 pts and 9 reb.

From last year, his PER is up from 10.6 to 23.9; WS/48 from minus-.011 to .193; eW/484 from .68 to 1.66

Kobe's gone from a career-low TS% last year (.527) to a career best so far this year (.599).
Previous high is .580, in 2007.
His eFG% is .064 better than last year, and he's shooting more and better FT%.
He also leads the league in turnovers, with a TO% that's below only his rookie year and 2005.
He's got a better assist% than all but 3 other seasons.
His ORtg (117) and WS/48 (.230) are career bests.

Most of these guys are shooting much worse this year. Wade and Dwight are not shooting worse, just less; and doing less of everything else.
Iguodala is shooting more and worse; doing less of everything else.

If anyone is curious, here's a Most Improved list created as simply the Delta from a player's prior to the his current IPV. Given that movement from prior to IPV depends both on performance and also on MP (relative to that associated with the prior), this should sort of take care of both sources of 'improvement' simultaneously/optimally (in theory). Here's the 10 we get as of Dec 14th, along with their current IPV. Looks like lots of high field goal percentages, and lots of blocked shots...

1. Eric Bledsoe, IPV = 1.91
2. DeMarre Carroll, IPV = -0.01
3. JaVale McGee, IPV = 0.69
4. Serge Ibaka, IPV = 2.45
5. Reggie Evans, IPV = -1.09
6. Brook Lopez, IPV = 0.72
7. Marcus Morris, IPV = -1.50
8. DeAndre Jordan, IPV = 1.97
9. Larry Sanders, IPV = -0.34
10. Brandan Wright, IPV = 1.42

I'm curious.
Can you post their previous IPV, that this one is relative to?

For Bledsoe, our prior was -1.29. But since it was based on relatively few minutes (esp in 2012), and due to his age, he's moved off of that prior very quickly. Carroll was at -2.70 prior. I'm going to keep the other ones to myself for now, and I'll avoid getting myself into similar predicaments going forward (and apologize for doing so this time).

Surprised to see Noah down here, as most of his per game averages are up. But he's playing 40 mpg this year (30.4 last year), with his rebounds way down, turnovers way up, FG% at career low.

He is about 15% above his career averages for OR% and DR%. Equal to his rookie season on OR%, still 10% below his rookie DR%.

I assume the answers to your question include in part that he is healthy now and perhaps trying to rebound harder compared to last season's brief return. Maybe the lineup mix is also different and / or the coaching instruction on who hits the glass and how hard is different. Maybe he is harder to box out now when playing with other rebounders. 30% of his time is with R Evans. The biggest minute Lopez-Evans lineups are great on rebounding.http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... eups/2013/ The majority of the very biggest minutes smallball Lopez-Wallace lineups are poor to very poor at rebounding.

Despite his personal stat improvement, team rebounds much better this season on both glasses without him than with. http://www.82games.com/1213/12BKN15.HTM#onoff
In 2010-11 team rebounding showed little difference with /without.
In 2009-10 they were better with him than without.

J.E.'s Adjusted RAPM factor for rebounding for 2011 (and before I think) had him estimated as a modest negative impact on offensive rebounding and somewhat larger positive impact on defensive rebounding. I haven't calculated the average rating of centers.

Adjusted RAPM factors for the current season (and season and a half) would be interesting to see. "Pure" single season RAPM factor or maybe a RAPM and a boxscore mix as in overall xRAPM with prior information.

I've converted eWins to per48 rates, so they'll be on the same scale as Win Shares.
The top 3 in eWins gained are also the top 3 (among these 15) in WS+
9 of 15 show even bigger gains in WS than in eW.
Harden is the big anomaly in WS. He could even win MIP.

Of 58 guards w >1000 minutes, Kemba Walker is #10 in PER and #34 in WS/48.
Greivis Vasquez is #44 in WS/48 and #20 in PER

In 20 minutes I was able to process all players' PER and WS rates from last year to this year, to get most improved in those metrics (times minutes), with the season right at its midpoint.

Code: Select all
