I completely agree that a theoretical book will have a longer shelf life. I expect to see more theoretical books (both good and not so good) coming out of the academic community in the near future. Sports analytics is gaining popularity among that group, and writing is typically built into the responsibilities of the job. (I am a math professor.)
I also want to echo that journal articles and conference submissions can be great reads. Perhaps it's worth putting together a list (or database) of recent contributions. I thought the Sloan Conference had some interesting basketball submissions last year.
