EDIT: Expansion team players are now listed with their actual teams, and the list is expanded to 40.
Likely there will be more wrinkles to work out.

The final column is equivalent wins per 404 minutes, and 1.00 is average.
eWins are e404*minutes/404, and this is multiplied by 44/(games played by team thus far) -- e44, or projected season eWins assuming the player plays/misses the same minutes the rest of the way.

5 on list for Vegas, 4 for Minnesota. 4 for Atlanta, 3 for Indiana. 3 for Golden State. Nearly 2/3rds for 5 teams. Top 7 records all have 2+. I think 5 with none. Proportional would be 2.

Yeah thanks for drawing attention to this. See the edit and revised list above.

Caitlin Clark:

6th best on team by ws/40.

9th best on raw team +/- on court, 10th on / off at -9. Mildly negative with Boston, moderately negative with Cunningham.

Below league average fg% from 2 and 3.

2nd in league on usage rate. 5th on points, 1st on assists per game.

Just 11 WNBA players in league history average even 60% as many assists as C Clark. None of them approach her scoring average.

T is just the sum of other 3 columns.
Dominating the passers in Pts and Ast. Only Alyssa Thomas is notably stronger rebounder.

WNBA games are 40 minutes. Multiply her averages by 48/40, and these NBA players could be considered equivalent vs the competition. Here the 11 top Assist averages are within 80% of Clark's rate.

No attempt has been made to adjust for statistical 'inflation' in various eras of either league. Trae, Magic and Oscar playing in high-scoring eras; and no others especially close across the board.

Clark critics rightly point to her high turnover rate as a statistical area needing improvement.
Points, Rebounds, and Assists all arise from (or lead to) opportunities to get a turnover.
Looking at players with lots of these "opps", using this crude formula:
opps = FGA + .44*FTA + Reb + Ast
A'ja Wilson leads the league with 631 opps, and 36 players have at least 300 (roughly half of A'ja).

My best predictor of player turnovers resulting from Pts, Reb, and Ast (in 2026 WNBA) is:
TO? = .050*Pts + .052*Reb + .323*Ast
From this, A'ja would be expected to have 51 turnovers; and she has 51.

[This study was done a week or so ago, so players may have a couple more games in them; sorry about that.]

Here are the 10 most excessively turnover-prone players among those top 36 opportunists:

Code: Select all

Player tm Po Pts Reb Ast TO? TO TO+ TO/?

Olivia Miles Min G 356 91 108 57 66 9 1.15
TO? is TO expected by the formula shown.
TO+ is TO in excess of expected (TO - TO?)
Final column is ratio of TO/TO?

Here are those least apt to commit a TO while being productive:

Code: Select all

Player tm Pos Pts Reb Ast TO? TO TO+ TO/?
Jessica Shepard Dal F 271 219 102 58 32 -26 .55

Jackie Young LVA G 314 88 129 62 40 -22 .65
Veronica Burton GSV G 243 71 108 51 34 -17 .67

Skylar Diggins Chi G 250 59 89 44 30 -14 .68
Janelle Salaün GSV F 249 83 23 24 17 - 7 .71
Nneka Ogwumike LAS F 275 145 39 34 24 -10 .71
Courtney Williams Min G 301 101 77 45 34 -11 .75
Kayla McBride Min G 278 75 49 34 27 - 7 .81
At first glance, it looks like those in the upper list are younger than those in the lower one; with exceptions.
EDIT: The top 10 in excess turnovers avg 25.9 years old; for the bottom 10, it's 27.8
Top 2 rebounders are best and worst in the league at taking care of the ball.
