Index of thread topics (thru June 8, 2011)

Given that the standard search by key word is almost entirely useless (and that there has been no action on the issue at system level),

and given most will probably not use the google approach I described before,
http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics/vi ... 9&start=90
(this is the only way to search by key word in the body of threads, not just titles)

and not knowing how much folks are willing to just browse 12 pages (and more pages coming) looking for a title, (maybe not much)...

here is an index of the threads on the site as of today.

I don't know if it will be used much, but I've assembled it, so use it if you want.

You can use your browser to search for a key title word or phrase here and find listings on that topic and basic directions to where it is located.

(Obviously new pages are going to be added, hence for the pages of the General Forum I identified them as oldest, second oldest, etc.)

Why didn't you just take the RSS feed from the old site and harvest that for all the old threads? Most feed readers (like Google Reader, for example) keep all the old feeds and are searchable.

Because I did think of that and don't (at least currently) know how to do anything useful with that.

Are you saying use RSS just to recover titles of threads or complete threads or to reconstruct threads?

Recovery of single individual posts as they are entered would seem to be an absurdly time-consuming and inefficient way to get titles or more importantly to reconstruct entire pages and to my knowledge face a 30 day limit. If any RSS can reload entire unrecovered threads from something other than existing on the site right now data that would be an improvement over finding and recovering a page at a time the way I did from google cache for a significant amount of time.

If it was envisioned as primarily a way to get more thread titles, I can already get plenty more thread titles. I've recovered the ones I was most interested in within the time devoted.

I haven't used RSS til now. My brief look into it yielded me no new and useful capability other than it is another way to search for key words in the body of posts from the last 30 days. I don't know how much in the way of posts or entire threads can be recovered from it with additional user knowledge, technique and efforts beyond what I see and understand right now.

Does Google Reader or other RSS feed readers keep more somewhere than the central Google search engine cache that I worked from? That would surprise me but I don't know.

Of course you can go ahead and try to do recovery this way (or part of it) since you thought of it and suggest something useful can be done this way. Same for anyone else who already understands this process. If it works I hope you demonstrate recovery of not yet recovered threads and provide a detailed set of instructions in writing here and make it easier for others do some recovery as well.

Was not aware you/anyone was expecting anything from me??? I use Google Reader to read the posts on the board... it allows me to skip over stuff I'm not interested in. If anyone else reads the board through Google Reader (or basically any other RSS feed reader), all of the old posts are saved to their feed reader account. That's all I've got on the subject. I have no idea about extracting that info or anything like that.

I was kinda hoping for a reply to my response to your comment, so thanks. I was interested in knowing more whether you actually had a useful method for recovering threads, since you took time to note something I didn't do. But since it still appears at this time to be a method that will only yield single posts in date order and not threads it doesn't appear that this suggestion will help with any reasonable level of efficiency (at least based on what I can tell). It would have taken some effort even if it were a promising option and since you don't seem inclined to pursue it and since no one else thought it was worth pursuing yet, I guess that probably raps up this possibility from my perspective.
