Melo's most frequent attempts...are very efficient???

Post by bbstats »

Pretty sweet article from CourtVision: http://www.kirkgoldsberry.com/courtvision.htm

I never would have thought Carmelo's shooting was overly "optimal" (or "aligned" as Kirk says in the article). What say you all?

Melo's attempts may be fairly aligned for his FG%s by location looking at him on his own, but his overall shot distribution is not very optimal relative to others.

As is well-documented elsewhere, mid-range shots continue to appear to be the worst shots out there for almost everyone. Being a good mid-range shooter is important from a team perspective (because you can't always get inside, fouled or open from 3), as long as the team mid-range frequency is kept to a minimum. The Knicks are actually in the lowest 7 for mid-range attempts from 10-15 feet and 16-23 feet. But they are also bottom 7 on inside shots. 3rd highest on 3 pt attempts but 5th worst at converting them. Overall they have the 5th worst offense of any playoff team. It would be nice if they had some inside game to go with the 3 pt bombing and raise the team FG%.

Thanks for the compliment. I tried to tell a bit of a story. (As usual, I can tell a little better story with a bit more time and revisions.)
