Euro rival to STATS LLC's SportVU?

This system comes from Switzerlands' EPFL (a technical university it seems) and uses 8 cameras, so it seems like a completely different system from SportsVU which I believe uses 6 cameras.

On the one hand, why re-invent the wheel, they could've licensed (assuming STATS is willing to share, which they might not be) SportsVU and built from there. But sometimes it's good to have rival research teams. Maybe they come up with essentially the same thing: videocassette technology using VHS vs Betamax, and it's essentially wasted duplicated effort. But maybe one team comes up with the PC and the other comes up with the Mac. Or maybe one uses DC and the other AC, whatever.

I don't know the details about these systems but it's possible that each possesses some strengths or features that the other does not.

Perhaps the next generation of sports analytics conferences will have to be international in scope ... Lausanne anyone? (Where the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne is ... also the HQ of the IOC, hmm.)

EPFL is one of the best research universities in Europe. I have several colleagues who did postdocs over there and then got academic jobs in the US.

While these systems look great, I will only really be interested if the NBA actually makes the data public. Short of that, you have to work for a team to have any fun with hit.
