Assisted-On Threes Visualization

I've created an interactive visualization (d3) of the occurrence of assisted-on made three pointers by player. I also included data on three point field goal % and shot attempts to plot against.

Please let me know what you think and if anything doesn't make sense.

I personally was glad to see Kobe Bryant with such a low 3pt fg% and assisted-on%, which only confirmed my annoyance with him chucking up so many bad threes. And unfortunately, I'm a Lakers fan.

Here's a link to the visualization itself: http://vorped.com/bball/index.php/viz/assisted_threes. (Modern browser required, meaning not Internet Explorer).

And here's a static image of the visualization, with some added text that identifies a few particularly interesting players.

PS. Yes, this is basically identical to the Hans Rosling Gapminder visualization (http://www.gapminder.org/). That wasn't intentional, but maybe it was subconsciously intentional.

Nice visualization.
I expected Novak to be in the upper right :)

Kind of surprised Ray Allen's percentage is so high, I don't watch many Celtics games though

Ryan Anderson led the league with 420 attempts, according to the chart. In the books, he had 422.
He also led the league in makes, with 166.
The chart says he was assisted on .994 of his made shots; meaning just one of his 166 3FG was unassisted. Gotta say "wow".

All of the prolific 3FG-attempting point guards who were also below-avg in 3FG% -- Jennings, DWill, Walker, Ellis, Felton -- played for below-avg teams.

This is a very cool chart!

I don't want to sound too cheeky, but is it possible that their teams are below average BECAUSE they jack up 3's at a low efficiency rate? Is it possible this prolific three/low 3pt FG% combo could actually be a proxy for below-average coaching/lack of team discipline or chemistry?

With Deron Williams and Kemba, it's pretty obvious that their teams just stink. But Jennings I wonder about, because it's not like he doesn't have capable three point shooters around him. Same for Ray Felton, who has a lot of quality shooters like Babbitt, Matthews, and Batum flanking him. Though I guess he does have another black hole in Jamal Crawford next to him, so maybe he's justified.

Those guys have all (other than Kemba) had better 3FG% when they've been on better teams; and even .330 shooting from your PG may be better than having a F (at .370) shoot them, rather than going for the rebound.

In a low-functioning offense, everyone's FG% tends to suffer. It often comes down to getting a decent shot, rather than an optimal shot (or no shot).
