This poll feels like a laugh test for a stats board.

Would be more interesting with the 1-5 rankings of official votes, and then create an All NBA team based on Consensus stats systems. I'll go out on a limb and guess LeBron, Durant and Paul would be on the team. 2nd guard(Parker, Westbrook, Harden, Kobe) and Centre(Duncan?) would be tricky.

LeBron has all of the first 10 votes. I'd thought maybe Durant would get some, though the recent Miami winning streak seems to have put some separation between the two.

The bb-ref blog used to do that with a few metrics. Someone here may start such a thread, and folks could submit their entries.

I'd put Paul ahead of Durant for second place, as he completely runs the Clippers offence, and (probably) saves the energy of the other four guys on court for the Clips to go towards better defensive work.

I'd say Paul 3rd.

I'd be surprised if anybody saw the top 3 any differently.

Paul has missed 12 games and averaged 33 minutes in games he plays in.
The Clipps are 37-13 with him and 6-6 when he doesn't play.
He's played 55% of his team's minutes.
Durant has played 80% of his team's minutes so far. That's a big difference.
A player who isn't on the floor isn't very valuable at that time.

Yep, the real question is "Who's #2?"

I would say Kevin Durant in terms of season-long production, since he's played significantly more minutes.

The biggest question is obviously "who's #4?".

I'd heard Parker and Carmelo mentioned as mvp candidates, but I guess it was just someone determined to try and create some buzz. Apparently no serious observer would take these seriously.
And sometimes a #2 guy -- Griffin, Westbrook, Wade -- is said to be the glue or whatever that makes the #1 guy look good.

I think there's a difference between being a serious candidate (i.e. a player for whom one could make a case that wouldn't get laughed out of the room) and who the best choice is. As Statman and bbstats have pointed out, we're getting to the point where the more interesting and informative discussion has really become "How many players have an actual argument that can be made for them (regardless of whether or not it's the most persuasive)?"

I take guys like Parker and Melo seriously as candidates even though I think that James is the best choice.

Pure rankings don't show the degree of separation between players. It'd be nice to see MVP candidates rated out of 10 or something. 10 is a perfect MVP season/candidate, 5 is a fringe contender, 0 has no business being called MVP, etc. This way you can see the dropoff between number 3 and number 4.

I think voters get to pick #1 thru 5, with a weight of 10-5-3-2-1 on these.

Durant has gotten someone's vote! It's now 14-1.
