2013 stars and their historic similars

Post by Mike G »

Standardizing for team and opponent points and rebounds and other variables, we get per 36 minute rates that should be roughly equivalent on any team, in any era.
Steals, blocks, and turnovers are estimated for seasons earlier than 1974.
Ranked by the 'euclidean distance' for each category shown -- the sum of the square roots of the differences in each column.
Listing only the most similar season by each of the 10 least-different players.

First up, the king:

.73   Karl Malone     2001   27.5   9.7   4.9   2.8   1.2   3.1   .8
LeBron has an unconscionably low foul rate, along with everything else.
Ginobili, of all people, is the only one with a lower TO rate.

Duncan had a phenomenal block/foul ratio this year.
That's an anomalous year for Wilt, based on just 12 games.

Continuing, in no particular order. Actually, it's just summary productivity per minute leaders.

About as many F as G in this list. Resemblance to West means Harden's Stl, TO, and Blk are not far from historic norms, given his other rates. Well, his TO are pretty high.

I guess it's the low Blk/Reb ratio.

Barnes and McGinnis are ABA guys. ABA stats are downgraded based on average translations by players jumping leagues, year by year. By '74-75, the differences are minimal.

"Steals, blocks, and turnovers are estimated for seasons earlier than 1974."

Can you talk about that method?

It's cool to see a similarity method like this. The points per 36 minutes is lacking some information though: break it up by usage and efficiency. Carmelo and Durant can score the same amount but in entirely different situations. Likewise, it'd be nice to see the stats broken down by zone. Unfortunately, we only have three-point and foul shot information for most of the league's history. Might be interesting to see similarity rankings for guys based on midrange shots, in the paint shots, etc.

Which guy is the furthest away from anyone else (i.e. most unique guy)? Wade's combination of shotblocks/assists/scoring is impressive. Few players of his size pass like Diaw except for scorers like Webber. But I don't think Diaw rebounds enough to pull away from guys like Iguodala.

Steals and blocks are very crudely estimated from these rates:
Stl = sqrt(Ast) - 0.4
Blk = sqrt(Reb) - 1.5
Yeah, that produces some negative block values, so I change them to .05 or something (per36).
I haven't worked on improving these guesses in at least 10 years.

Turnovers are estimated as:
TO = Sco*.08 + Reb*.07 + Ast*.16 + Stl*.05 + Blk*.10 - MPG*.005
... break it up by usage and efficiency. Carmelo and Durant can score the same amount but in entirely different situations...
Carmelo and Keith Bogans both took about 6 threes per 36 this year, and at about the same %. Does that make them similar?

Every time you add a variable -- some think Age is a critical one -- or divide one variable into several, you're diluting the importance of the rest of them. Most teams want Scoring, and it's not too critical how it comes.

Now, if you are looking for "similar scorers", then feel free to explore all the ways and means at your disposal. I have deliberately rolled up several variables into what I think of "scoring strength" -- the Sco column.

Basically, it's: Sco = Pts/36 * 100/OppPPG * TS%/.527
This is adjusted upward for starters, downward for subs; up or down depending on their unassisted% (in the modern age when these are known; otherwise just given a boost for mpg >32).
In a 100ppg environment (per team), an average scorer gets 15 pts/36.

The theory is that if Durant has to take more shots, his shooting% drops. He becomes more like Carmelo. Everyone is affected by their teammates, coaches, etc. If you're taking a lot of bad shots, you go to the bench. A team in dire need of points loves a 52% shooter; another team not so much.

Without Westbrook in the playoffs, Durant took more shots and made them not so well. He became more like Carmelo.
Carmelo could have taken fewer shots. Just giving up the bad shots, his team likely has to take even worse shots, and they do worse as a team.
These are simplified descriptions, but I assume they are generally true in history.

"Without Westbrook in the playoffs, Durant took more shots and made them not so well. He became more like Carmelo."

This isn't exactly fair. Now, I'm a fan of usage vs efficiency, but Durant had RWB vs a below-league average defense (Houston) and was all alone vs the 2nd best defense (Memphis)

What about utilizing height? That's known and affects blocks greatly (and steals to a lower extent). Seems like it would refine your estimates a little bit more.

Yes, height would probably be a better indicator than rebound rate. In fact, a tall guy who does not rebound well or score much, yet gets minutes, is likely a shot-blocker.

My original dataset was entered by hand, and I didn't bother with height -- or age.
With basketball-reference and all the search and sort features, it's easier to use that for most things.

Not sure why they gave up on player similarities. They insisted on only using players of the exact same age for comparison; I suggested they use 'age' as just another parameter.
'Height' was also one of their parameters. As such, statistically dissimilar players were said to be similar -- Bird and Gervin, for example -- when their 'game' and productions really weren't very similar.

Even without standout defensive numbers, good defenders are sometimes known by their stats. Or is it random?

Re: 2013 stars and their historic similars

Post by Mike G »

Thus far, Anderson Varejao has the most unique statistical profile, with a difference of .31 from his nearest matches (late Barkley/Oakley). But that was for just 25 games.

Then we have Brook Lopez, with elite scoring and shotblocking, but pedestrian rebounding. Most-similar Kevin McHale has several seasons from .25 to .35 difference.

A difference of 1.00 seems to be just about one "position" difference -- at that much difference, a SF is largely compared to SG and PF. At a difference of 2.00, C and PG are in the mix.

Up to a .50 diff, players are more or less interchangeable. That's not the same as "indistinguishable"; it just means you might sub one out for the other in your lineup without noticing much.

It's been 20 years since anyone (Clifford Robinson, Por) went 2000 minutes and averaged >20 pts/36, >2 blk/36, and <9 Reb/36.
Lopez averaged 23, 8.2, and 2.5
