The Journal of Sports Analytics is a new journal we have launched that aims to be the central forum for the discussion of practical applications of sports analytics research, serving team owners, general managers, coaches, fans, and academics. We invite analytical research on any single sport or across sports that seeks to improve our understanding of the game or strategies for improving a team or a league. More information is available here: http://journalofsportsanalytics.com

By way of background, our advisory board comprises Rich Cho, Tim Connelly, Marc Cuban, Eric DeCosta, Kevin Demoff, Dell Demps, Jessica Gelman, Dan Kantrovitz, Tony Khan, Ted Leonsis, Sig Mejdal, and Daryl Morey. Our editorial board further includes top sports analysts and practitioners from various teams and leagues across a variety of sports; please see the website for a complete list. The publisher is IOS Press.

Looking forward to reading your research,

Philip Maymin and Eugene Shen
Co-editors-in-chief

In addition to accepting completed papers, will your editorial and advisory boards (especially in the first months or years) be presenting any more detailed feedback than the brief list of topics posed on the cover page about the topics and approaches you want to see papers on? It would be helpful as well if that feedback included some forthright talk about the limitations of the existing research and application of that work. It is great to be open to independent thought but it could also be very helpful to get a lot of feedback about what the end users of this kind of analysis really want, what they need to do better than before. Over time, that could emerge somewhat based on what research is published and what research is acquired or advanced with their direct support but it would be a new and useful thing to get far more specific direction from the end users in public than currently exists. Are these boards going to meet once or more a year? Will the minutes or findings of these board meetings be shared in the publication? Any indication that advisory board members inside teams are going to allow their staff to submit papers and share anything about their internal progress?

I was thinking this Journal already exists. And by coincidence, in my email is a message from Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports, selling their product. In the current issue is an article titled "Effect of position, usage rate, and per game minutes played on NBA player production curves". But it costs $40 to read it.

The difference between the titles of these Journals is just one word (out of 5).
Is the JSA a competitor to JQAS? An alternative, and not a successor?

JSA says: "The contents of at least the first two volumes will be freely available online. "
That's nice. They also have a substantial list of people on Advisory and Editorial boards. Some names are familiar.

We'll see what we can do, but it likely won't be a very formal academic thing. One thing I've found useful in other fields have been short interviews with questions like, what are you working on now, what do you see as interesting and exciting, that kind of thing. Maybe something like that, once per issue would be ideal, but we'll have to see how it goes. I think this comment addresses the rest of your questions too (except for the one below) but please let me know if not.

That's on a team-by-team basis, so I don't know the general answer.

One word can make a big difference :)
Journal of Finance vs. Journal of Financial Economics vs. Review of Finance vs. Mathematical Finance vs. Quantitative Finance vs. Algorithmic Finance

It is definitely an alternative, with a different focus. The JQAS is a fine journal and an official journal of the American Statistical Association. The JSA is more of a practitioner's journal. Our editorial perspective is entirely about what would be interesting to a practitioner.
