Defensive metrics

I was interested in looking at defensive impact with a focus on which players protect the paint the best. So i decided to look at two variables DRPM for a general look at players defensive impact, which i got from Espn.com. And then i used the sportsvu data to look at Opponets FGP at Rim.

When looking at the DRPM i only looked at players who had a positive value. And for Opponents FGP at Rim, to restrict the sample to "big men" I made a minimum of atleast 6 FGA at the Rim per game. I standarized both values. Then multiplied all values of Opponets FGP at the Rim by -1, because having a lower Opp FGP is desirable (negative relationship). While having a higher DRPM is desirable (positive relationship). Finally added both values to come up with a final def statistic to measure defensive impact which I called, totaldef.

I've attached the final excel document with the ranks, some interesting stuff. Golbert being at the top with other top rim defenders following him Bogut, Ibaka, etc.

This is my first time posting and I am pretty new to this stuff. Would love any pointers or comments. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks.

Can you attach documents to posts? My data was pretty messy when I just copied and pasted and when i tried to allign collumns it all just got messed up.

Hi, welcome. The sum is interesting for a rough two approach rating estimate but the difference is probably worth seeing too. DRPM of course includes rim protection so essentially the sum of the metric zscores double weights that aspect of defensive relative to all the rest.

One decimal place is enough for this data.

Ah I didn't know DRPM took into account rim protection. And just curious what would the differences between the variables show?

Defensive impact from other than rim protection, so the difference would be from perimeter shot defense, steals, defensive rebounding and fouls given and difference between your rim protection value and what DRPM implicitly thinks it is. DRPM theoretically captures the value of at the rim shots deterred, whereas your rating doesn't right now. Hypothetically you could look at dif. in at the rim shots actual vs expected to close gap but RPM is actual game based rather than this season based estimate.
