Longest streak of games with 20+ minutes and no attempted free throws

1) Shawn Marion 19 games (2014)
2) Pablo Prigioni 16 games (2014)
3) TJ McConnell 15 games (2016)

mcconnell has played 449 minutes to date without a single FTA. the most minutes played in a season without a FTA was luke walton, 364 min in 11-12 (not sure the most minutes played before at least one FTA)...

ever watch mcconnell play? he routinely drives to the basket, even within a few feet of the rim, yet will always pass off if any defender is nearby, will make no attempt to try to score or draw a foul. does this as much as 7-8 times a game...

In the 2001 playoffs, Danny Ferry went 334 minutes without a FTA, in 13 G @ 26 mpg.
He was 21/46 from the arc and 6/22 inside it.
That's the opposite of McConnell, who has hit .292 on 3's and .524 on 2's.

Yep, watched EVERY game he played at Arizona - & that's exactly what he does.

Was BY FAR his biggest red flag in his NBA projections - he almost never creates contact to get to the line. I was confident the rest of his game was at least backup NBA PG quality. But as a guy with the ball in his hands a ton - not getting to the line is not a good sign for enduring NBA "success".

The amazing thing is - he DRIVES to the hoop often (as was said), he's not at all the type of guy that one would think would NEVER get to the line - one would think that would be reserved for designated three point shooters who do nothing else. Just by pure chance you'd think he would get the foul call in a bonus situation.

The other odd thing about him - he'll dive all over the court for loose balls & such - BUT he doesn't seem to have ANY ability to "look" like he was fouled when going to the hoop, or going around screens, etc. He doesn't fling himself to the ground on drives, he doesn't do any whiplash action when a defender touches him, etc. I like that about him watching him play - but the analytics side of my brain hates he doesn't sneak foul calls to get himself free points.

He'll almost certainly attempt a FT as long as he is playing. Then he may or may not end up among these player-seasons with most minutes with fewest FTA:

Code: Select all

. player yr Min FTA
Luke Walton 2012 364 0
Josh Childress 2012 491 2
Mike Miller 2015 701 4
Mike Miller 2012 752 5
Troy Murphy 2012 956 9
Pablo Prigioni 2014 1283 12
Keith Bogans 2013 1408 17
Matt Bonner 2009 1928 23
John Paxson 1992 1946 37
Blair Rasmussen 1992 1968 40
Steve Blake 2010 2159 48
Anthony Peeler 2003 2245 50
Jose Calderon 2014 2468 63
Jason Kidd 2011 2653 77
Kurt Thomas 2005 2855 84
Jason Kidd 2010 2881 99
Shane Battier 2008 2907 101
Dennis Rodman 1994 2989 102
...

Nobody has finished a season with exactly one FTA in more than 279 minutes.

With 1 FTA in 517 min., he supplants Childress in the #2 slot (above) -- most minutes with < 4 FTA.
[He didn't make the FT; he's 0-1]
