There's something else I think. Has to be, right?

Christian Wood was one of 8 undrafted players I threw out to an NBA high up who was talking with me as best for Summer League pick up by my draft model directly after the draft. Seth Tuttle, TJ McConnell, Robert Upshaw, Cliff Alexander, Derrick Marks, Rayvonte Rice, & Wesley Saunders were the others (in the exact order I presented & was discussed, Wood was last). He mentioned Christian Wood had "issues" - he didn't clarify (& I didn't ask) if the issues were health or personal.

At draft time he was downgraded for high body fat and apparently bad interviews (might have been over-confidence or lack of attention, energy, etc.). It would have to be usually bad to justify the rejections, imo.

He's one of just 40 active players with career PER>19 and WS/48 > .140
While those are nice numbers, I estimate his opponents have only been 39% starters -- low on the team.
So at 8 minutes per appearance, he may have gotten mostly garbage time?

All his 14 appearances were losses, by 17 pts on avg.

There was some indication Wood was out with Okafor when he got in trouble. That probably was an important factor in the decision. Can't say from outside if it was warranted. But Jerry making noise. Adding Brand probably doesn't make much W-L impact but if it makes any it adds to the tank.

Wood was with Okafor. Don't know what role, if any, that played. He apparently is joining the 87ers for the D-League showcase.

14 pts, 9 rebs in 26 minutes per game in d league with decent shooting / scoring stats is not bad. Not thrilling though. 27% defensive rebounding for a guy listed at 216 pounds is notable. He might be headed for a multi year return trip to NBA a la Whiteside instead of a quick bounce back. If he gets to 225-235 with muscle tone I'd expect better performance.

Mistake corrected, sort of. But now he becomes an unrestricted agent instead of being controlled under a low cost deal with team options? Still a mistake, I think. Now a mistake for a lot of rest of league too in not taking him for development. Either as free agent or moreso when he was on old contract and could have been picked up off waivers. He might not pan out great but the potential value beats almost all or all 15th men.

They may not be done with him.

NBA financial system is so complicated. So many moves are about money, not so much directly basketball.

Wood's very long reach is a plus, as is his ability to take really long strides. He is 2 stride move from a dunk almost anywhere within 15-20 feet.
