Marks and Atkinson lauded for effort, going a new way.
Ok, expected. But if you make a big effort, a new way it is fair to look for results. It is real early... but there are few good results. Mostly it is same as last season or worse. On wins, offensive & defensive efficiency ratings, the four factors, SRS.
Big increase in 3 point attempts but lousy at hitting them. Big increase in fouls committed with no positive impact. Assists down, turnovers way up. Team & coach win 5 games less than expected by point differential.
Riding an exercise bike at level 20? Nice symbolic marketing note. It is too early to expect a lot of improvement but is effort and compliments for effort enough to show and sustain hope for more later?
No Lopez trade. No major free agent. Hollis-Jefferson got worse. Not much Linsanity. Yogi Ferrell and Anthony Bennett come & go without success. Hamilton plays close to or at his NBA worst. Booker & Acy do well but will either be around beyond the bottom years?
Probably still real tough to get good free agents. At least those expecting winning any time soon. Contention? That is a dream for the next decade. Which part, if any?

Last year the Nets TO% was 13.6, ranking 21st but just 0.4 worse than league avg.
This year, it's 15.0, better only than the Sixers' 15.1, and 2.2 worse than avg.
Almost everyone on the team has worse TO rates since last season. And there were only 3 guys returning from last year's squad.
Last year and this year TO per 100 possessions, and ensuing
additional turnovers this year:
Code: Select all
TO/100 min 1516 1617 gain ad'l
Lopez 1748 3.6 4.0 .4 15
Kilpatrick 1653 2.5 3.8 1.3 45
Booker 1557 2.6 3.3 .7 23
Bojan 1482 2.7 2.9 .2 6
Rondae 1327 2.1 3.4 1.3 36
Harris 1138 3.4 2.3 -1.1 -26
Hamilton 1005 1.9 1.7 -.2 -4
Foye 959 2.6 3.3 .7 14
Dinwiddie 929 2.2 2.4 .2 4
Lin 490 3.7 4.8 1.1 11
Scola 461 2.1 3.5 1.4 13
...
total 12749 136
That's 81% of player minutes. Rookie PG Isaiah Whitehead gets 4.5 TO and 5.9 Ast per 100.
136 additional TO = 2.1 per game.
Oh, they've upped their
pace since last year, from 95.2 to
101.4 -- fastest since the Mullin-Hardaway-Owens Warriors of '91-92

Atkinson with the very worst player development score in the Zig Zag Analytics coaching article. Not average, not bad, the very worst. Accelerated player development is usually bad for awhile but you hope for some signs of success.
Probably will have to go a new way from the current new way if it doesn't show signs of progress next season.

I like their draft
LeVert (20th pick) - He currently has 2nd highest BPM among players with minutes 2016 class behind in Hernangomez. Uses possession at an average rate of .548 TS, 106 ORTG which is pretty good compared to some players in rest of this class, and he's doing it on a team with no perimeter talent most of the year to take pressure off his shots. Assists and steals have been pretty good for a rookie wing. Has looks like a player-isms by eye test. Turns 23 this year but justifiable to consider him top 10 in redraft.
Whitehead (42nd pick) - I'm biased since he rated high in my draft model so I've been tracking him wanting him to be a steal, but while his PER, WS, BPM numbers are bad, possibly unsalvageable, he has some encouraging peripherals I think. Drives the basket the most of rookie guards I believe, and his 3pt shooting projects well (33% for the year, but 37% in 2017, and 85% FT for the year, 90% in 2017. Projected well as a shooter for me coming out of college). Based on this there's a world where his combination of driving+3pt shooting ends up really good? Has the tools to be a decent defender. In recent weeks his scoring game/efficiency is much better but his assists have fallen off a cliff. Could be a sign he's a SG who was forced into PG spot a lot of the year.

Whitehead has big issues with shooting and turnovers but I can see some hope for development. Offensive rating has improved since all-star break but only from terrible to less terrible.
Josh E., who does he compare closest to as a rookie?
Best player pair amongst most used is with Kilpatrick at about neutral on raw plus minus. Negative with rest of top 10. Not sure how team does with Lin-Whitehead. Will check nbawowy.com later.
Lavert has no super huge issues. Pretty good start. Couldn't immediately find his RPM. What position does RPM list have him at? When you can't sort by team or name, you end up playing hide n seek with a number of guys.

Hard guy to peg. He has a few guys on the list that definitely improved but the comp seasons are all from guys playing ~750 minutes. It's all over the place. Unless the lottery ticket hits, it doesn't look good at all. That Norris Cole comp looks like a realistic scenario to me.
*Note the future year's table is a bit jacked since he starts with a negative Talent score. I didn't think about it before I entered the original formula.
LaVert, on the other hand, looks solid. Should provide a lot of value over the next couple years. By these comps, his breakout would look something like James Posey/Lance Stephenson, but even just using the average for his comps, he's at ~.080 across the next few years. He'd be a solid role player for most teams, but will probably be over-extended by a crappy Nets team.
Just took a wild guess at some of these GP/MP numbers for everyone with contracts for next year. They're going to be so bad for so many years...
