Career Advice

Hello World,

I recently discovered this forum and am absolutely amazed with the topics and dialogue that occur here.

Currently, I work in marketing with a heavy emphasis on data analysis. However, like most of you, basketball has been my unwavering obsession/passion for my entire life. In mid-late May I will be starting a basketball analytics course with the intent of using this course as a platform to begin my journey to working with a team as an analyst.

I firmly believe that my knowledge and love of the game, along with a very strong knowledge base of the history, and strategies of the game will make me an asset to any organization.

Furthermore, as a rather personable person, who communicates very well, public speaking is not an issue.

If anyone here has any advice on what else I should be doing, please don't hesitate to let me know. I want to leave no stone unturned as I am very dedicated to making this dream a reality.

Thank you all for allowing me to be a part of this community.

Going to Vegas summer league, walking around and trying to introduce yourself to a lot of people could be good. Got to be bold... and polite and take what you get. Practice different approaches and see what works / doesn't.

The next Sloan conference in Boston in March would be another mingle opportunity and an opportunity to submit a research paper if you are ready for that. Some smaller conferences in NC, on west coast, etc.

Most of the early hires built websites to display research but many of the later waves of hired analysts these days didn't do this to my knowledge.

Teams care a lot about having lots of software / coding experience. Basketball acumen usually doesn't get much mention on job announcements. Whether it gets weight in interviews I dunno.

Unpaid internships sometimes lead to paid spots but not always.

Who you know has frequently played a big role. If you know an insider or someone that does see if you can work that crack.

Competition probably is getting greater all the time. It won't be easy. Either go 100% and / or accept that there are long odds.

Thank you for your honest feedback. It is refreshing to hear how much of a struggle this endeavor will be, as most things in life do not come easy.

Fortunately and foremost, I believe in myself. I always have, and always will. I can be persistent. I can handle rejection. I wouldn't be able to handle knowing that I didn't try my best.

Once again, thank you.

Strong intro, polite but strong follow-up. Seems like a good approach / good start. Good wishes.

The best advice will come from insiders or former insiders. Private message here or e-mail or tweet at some and ask for their advice in private. They are probably not in a rush to offer public advice or any advice but maybe a few or one give a few useful comments. Follow-up attempts at dialogue at least have a chance of developing into something. It did for some of them.

Crow, I like the go 100% or accept it is a pipedream statement. I think that is useful in most areas of life.

From what I've seen the best path to an NBA job is to start writing a blog and tweeting. Build your brand. Good luck!

There's lots of good "how to get a job with a team or media outlet" advice in the career panel from Sloan 2015 here:
