Research Ideas for Calculus Paper

Hey everyone, I'm part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at my high school, and in order to graduate with our IB diploma we have to pass written papers exploring different subjects. In Calculus, my assignment was to apply mathematics to an area that interests you. So of course I'm goin...

FG% compared to FT%

I need some help figuring out this question as I want to learn more about efficiency of FT shooting vs FGs for myself. Let's say my team's FG percentage is 25%. I'm a bad shooter, but an athletic player that can draw fouls. I can make 1 out of 2 when I go to the line. My FT percentage is 50%. How mo...

Re: Who Is More Productive

I have a problem. When I add up all the individual possessions (using the formula from "Basketball on Paper") I get 637 total possessions. But when I do 0.5 * ((Tm FGA + 0.4 * Tm FTA - 1.07 * (Tm ORB / (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)) * (Tm FGA - Tm FG) + Tm TOV) + (Opp FGA + 0.4 * Opp FTA - 1.07 * (Op...

Re: Who Is More Productive

I've done Individual Total Possession formula from "Basketball on Paper". When I add up all the individual possessions I get 566 possessions total. When I do (FGA+(.475*FTA)-ORB+TO)*.96 for the team I get 616 possessions. Which # of possessions is the right one.

Re: Who Is More Productive

Well I'm using that for my player's as well. I saw the Individual Offensive Rating in Dean Oliver's book. Should I be using Dean Oliver's formula from "Basketball on Paper" or can I keep using (PTS/POSS)*100 for individuals. Is their a big difference between the two?

Re: Who Is More Productive

The problem I have is that quite often the players I give almost no possessions will do well in it and look better than those who I give more to. I want to see who has the best productivity score. I already know who was more efficient. But Player B isn't as beneficial to the team as Player A, becaus...

Re: Who Is More Efficient

This all gets to usage vs. efficiency. It's likely that Derrick Rose would be much more efficient if his usage was closer to 20% than 35%. Why doesn't his coach cap his usage at 20%? Why doesn't Tyson Chandler (~70% TS this season) increase his usage from 15% to 35%? I'm just trying to figure out w...

Who Is More Productive

Kind of new to APBRmetrics. Hoping for some advice.

How would you be able to tell who is scoring more Efficiently.

Player A: 105 Offensive Rating and Usage % of 30
Player B: 115 Offensive Rating and Usage % of 15

Re: New to APBRmetrics: Any good books or articles?

I have already calculated all the above formulas before you mentioned Crow. I am just looking for some extra reading so I think I'll start with basketball on paper and all also get john hollinger's pro basketball forecast. What I try to do is see how these various formulas relate back to the player ...
