I'm trying to get started on APBRmetrics and i'm not sure what to do. I read the wiki page and their was not that much info there. I am trying to get an advantage in a game I play on the internet called Hoops Dynasty http://whatifsports.com/hd/.
I already checked out various articles and I read "A starting point for analyzing basketball statistics". I'm just looking for stuff that will give me an advantage in my game. I implemented a lot of stats already.
If their any good books or articles out their I would appreciate some recommendations.

Basketball on Paper by Dean Oliver is often recommended. It would help if you could tell us/knew how Hoops Dynasty did their calculations

Hoops Dynasty uses a basketball sim engine. The main part of the game is to try and figure out the engine. A player has a certain rating in each category for example: http://whatifsports.com/hd/RecruitProfi ... id=2006853. You try to recruit the best players possible and win a national championship. Their are different offensive and defensive sets so in man to man it is your offensive players one-on-one with the defense. Their is the following sets: Fastbreak, Motion, Flex, Triangle and defenses like: Man to man, zone, press. You can adjust the tempo at how fast you want to play as well
The cool thing is you can adjust how many minutes you want each guy to play and how much distribution he has of the team's possessions. Their is also ratings for each player though from 12 categories 1-100 with 1 being the worst and 100 being the best. The categories for each player are: Athleticsm, Speed, Rebounding, Defense, Shot Blocking, Low Post, Perimeter, Ball Handling, Pasing, Work Ethic, Stamina, Durability http://whatifsports.com/knowledgebase/K ... x?kbid=289.
I'm trying to find who my most efficient shooters are and give them more distribution and minutes.
I'll try that book. Just read Moneyball and really enjoyed it!

For efficient shooters specifically, you could find the formula for eFG% at basketball-reference.com http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/glossary.html
and compute it. Or better than just looking at eFG% would be TS% (including FT shooting) and Offensive Rating (includes turnovers). Usage % is given too. Formulas are given for each, if you wanted to have that detail available to guide your choices. But how the game actually works would affect whether it is wise or not to look at those stats vs the given rankings.

I have already calculated all the above formulas before you mentioned Crow. I am just looking for some extra reading so I think I'll start with basketball on paper and all also get john hollinger's pro basketball forecast.
What I try to do is see how these various formulas relate back to the player ratings. I've checked out the glossary of stats on basketball-reference. Some pretty cool stuff. Just discovered win shares!

impact of friendly/hostile crowd. impact of empty arena.

dealing with pressure coming with a bigger role on a team. is there any.

I asked the same question and got some good responses. Unfortunately, there are not too many analytics books out there for basketball. You can also get Basketball Analytics: Objective and Efficient Strategies for Understanding How Teams Win. I have not read it yet, but it is arriving today from Amazon.
