Defensive Efficiency-Lebron James
Defensive Efficiency-Lebron James
I'm also looking for a metric that quantifies Lebron James' defensive efficiency throughout all of last regular season, as in how many points he allowed individually. He held Derrick Rose to 1-15 from field on one particular night last year, which is saying something....

Probably the best answers for both this question and for the question in your other thread will come from Synergy. It's not perfect, but they should have stuff that addresses what you're looking for.
Re: Individual defense -- There really isn't a good stat out there like what you're describing. You could use counterpart data from 82games, but that data wouldn't get at Lebron defending Rose, for example. There's no accounting for zones, cross-matching, switching, double-teams, and help defense. If you want to do something to get at individual defense, I'd probably lean towards on/off team numbers (greater emphasis on the "on" numbers). You could also use the defensive stuff from Evan's stat (EZPM).
There are some who like the counterpart data. I think it misses too much to be useful -- especially for a guy like Lebron who could be defending anyone from the PF to the PG regardless of which teammates are on the floor with him.

Re: Defensive Efficiency-Lebron James
For estimated overall defensive impact the site http://stats-for-the-nba.appspot.com/ has him with an estimated +2.1 helpful impact on defensive per 100 game possessions when calculated using information from the year to inform this season's rating but only +0.9 without that prior information.
This is one of the first defensive measures I would turn to, though I'd use everything available to try to improve perspective and to recognize that it is an estimate with possible error. RAPM and EZPM are play by play data based metrics and cover all defensive impact and not just man vs man. Among the other most likely to be considered metrics, many are not complete defensive metrics (that is they exclude shot defense entirely [PER, ASPM, SPM, others] or just focus on man to man results [counterpart stats at 82 games]) and some do not accurately capture overall defensive impact or shot defense impact while actually on the floor but instead use average team results including for the time a player is off the court (Wins Produced, Defensive Rating & Win Shares) and give everyone the exact same overall or shot defense rating.
