New To Metrics

Post by mbstearsman »

Hello guys and gals. I am a 10 year college coaching veteran and I am starting my first season coaching on the women's side. I coach at a small NCAA D2 school and my head coach has a plus/minus system she uses, like every other coach in America. However, I feel it has man, many flaws and we argue over this weekly. I read the article in ESPN the magazine way back in March about Jim Larranaga and how he uses stats to come up with combinations of players, etc. I would like to develop some sort of stat system in our program that is based on our tempo, off efficiency, but also incorporates how often we score when the ball is entered into the post at some point during each possession. Are there any coaches out there that use tempo, off efficiency, def efficiency, etc. right now and don't mind talking about pros and cons, maybe over the phone?

Can you summarize or give key highlights from the article? I would like to hear what he is doing and what he is doing that interests you.

Do you have tempo, off. efficiency, def. efficiency data by lineup? Are you willing to share /post it and the player +/- data ? (You can change the names to player 1, 2, 3, etc. if you want privacy)

Is your argument with your head coach about using player level +/- data versus lineup data? Can't you agree to analyzing / discussing both concurrently?

If you want to talk to coaches, there are other sites where that may be easier to find. The few coaches who wander by here don't seem to stick around after asking their initial questions and I (and maybe another one or two) try to help.

No response in 10 days? That is fairly usual. I may not respond to any more coach inquiries.
