I note that the Basketball Analytics video from this year's Sloan Conference is up: http://www.sloansportsconference.com/?p=9994.
Anyone else had a chance to watch it yet?
Some pretty amusing stuff (perhaps unintentionally so) and even informative. The Stan Van Gundy bits, in particular.
Hairdresser on Fire
Re: Hairdresser on Fire
I would love a coach or someone close to a coach to put the most important of their inside lingo (mostly about play action) into a short simple cribsheet. Does anyone have one already? I should read more coaching books (with time) but a short cribsheet would be useful. I'd guess that the inside lingo probably could be easily learned in a few minutes or an hour and then the coaches would not be able to say "you don't know the lingo / "the real stuff". Lots of people have the ability to understand that stuff if the folks using that lingo would just "communicate" or communicate better. I am kinda tired of some insiders saying if you don't know what we mean by "floppy" or "icing", etc. then you are ignorant and should never be talked to or listened to when there does not seem to me to be to a super obvious easy source for those not inside to get that info. Insider language is used by many elites, intentionally or inadvertently, to maintain secrecy and control from those outside their particular guild. And it is usually better to break down that barrier.
These basketball analytic panels always have disappointed me for not dealing with issues in much depth and not sharing much that is new or helpful. This one was the same way. It is hard for me to imagine panelists saying less of real use in a hour.
