5+ 3ptrs made games by a player in the league recently

Post by Crow »

Approx. number of such player games in league:

2008-9 300
2009-10 275
2010-11 250
2011-12 200 (lockout shortened)
2012-13 350

I expect to see more years like last year in upcoming seasons and probably further increases but time will tell.

Probably, but the floor spacing only really works by having multiple spot-up guys littered around the three point line over the course of the game, so it'll be interesting to see whether teams begin to try to rely on individual three point shooters rather than taking a more Spurs-like approach to the issue.

There is plenty more analysis necessary to understand the 3 pt game and the game overall of course. But there were only 531 games last season where teams went for 10+ 3 pointers made. How many of these games had an individual contributing 5+ 3 pointers (out of the 350 of those)? I don't know right now but probably a healthy number. (That should be available to anyone with a play by play database and the time and interest.) There may be multiple things happening to stretch defenses. I'd think one guy being really hot from 3 would make it easier for the other guys to get open 3 pt looks due to the attention the hot guy is getting.

114 players had at least one 5+ 3ptrs made game this past season. 46 had at least 3, 22 at least 5. Only three with 10+, include teammates Curry and Thompson. Curry with the most this season at 20, tied for most all-time. He will probably break that, maybe regularly. Since late 90s there have been typically only 2-3 guys with 10+ such games in a season, none before 94-95.
