Adjusting defense by the numbers?

Post by Crow »

Saw this article
NBA Defenses by the Numbers
By Ryan Knaus

(see link in below post)

Wondered if anyone might be interested in "adjusting" the data based on the average seasonal performance of the opponents faced. I think it would be valuable to see how much the performances would be adjusted based of different schedules. I might get around to it later.

(fyi- the data links needed are at the very top and bottom of the article.)

I'm working on a similar project like the one posted but only with individual defenders. I want to find the best adjusted Synergy defenders for the 2014 season.

I really want to see the team data by play type for the playoffs. Player level too. Who is doing good in regular season with their choices but falling short because of them in playoffs? Thunder are best on PPS for pick n roll ball handler and iso plays in regular season but how good were they on these plays in playoffs? On average they are the least efficient play types. How much does the Thunder efficiency on these plays slip when facing good teams when it really matters? The late round record suggests that it is enough to help keep them from a title along with not elite enough playoff D.

Where would I find individual player matchup data? For example, is there a place I could find LeBron James' PPP last season when defended by Kawhi Leonard? I suppose the raw data could be found on Synergy by looking through each player's defensive plays, but is there anywhere else?
