All-Playoff Teams

Post by Mike G »

What if there were all-playoff teams for the NBA postseason? Would they look something like this?

Code: Select all

xyz 2011 Dal/Mia Tm G Min PER TS% Rb% As% St% Bk% TO% Usg% WS WS/48
4.1 Dwyane Wade Mia 21 39 26.3 .570 11 25 2 3 12 30 3.73 .216

3.7 LeBron James Mia 21 44 23.7 .563 12 28 2 2 13 27 3.82 .199
3.5 Kevin Durant Okl 17 42 24.1 .582 11 13 1 2 9 29 3.26 .217

xyz = WS * WS/48 * sqrt(PER)
This is obviously heavy on WinShares, with PER to recognize highly productive players, along with those highly efficient.
Only players with at least .100 WS/48 and 1.25 or more playoff WS were considered.
Team 1 is 4 Finalists and the best of the rest (Durant).
Two out-in-round 1 superplayers make the 3rd team.

LeBron the best player by PER, but out in round 2, makes tm1. Dirk best by ws48 out in round 1, makes team2.
Champion LA was top heavy. Runners-up Bos barely place a 2nd-teamer.

Here we have a non-Finalist heading the list, and it won't be the only time. However, I've done these back to 1978, and LeBron'09 is easily higher than anyone since then.
The magnitude of his domination of the first 2 rounds just hasn't been seen before or since. His .399 WS/48 essentially means he was as good as 4 average players.
This was his avg rate for 580 minutes. No one has a higher WS/48 for more than 32 minutes.
He'd have more than 14 games if 1st and 2nd round opponents (Det, Atl) could have won a game.

Dirk ranks highest of those short of the conference finals; Yao next.

An even earlier out was the superstar of these playoffs. Paul's PER and ws48 were so much better than anyone else's, he cops the top spot in spite of mediocre teammates.
Pierce was Finals mvp, but all games count the same here. You can't win the Finals if you don't get to the Finals, in fact.

Parker was Finals mvp, but that was his best series this year or maybe ever. He barely qualified at .100 ws48, coming in 23rd for the playoffs.
Amare with the best PER and ws48, by far.

Dirk played the most minutes and had the best ws48. Duncan higher by PER.
Arenas makes 2nd team with just 6 games. Posey has PER of a scrub and WS of an all-star.

Camby phenomenal in ws48, barely nipped by Duncan in PER.
Only 14 players met the qualifications this postseason (1.16 WS and .100 ws/48). Four of the final 6 series were sweeps, thus fewer WS.

Charles takes most WS, thanks to a lot of minutes.
DC could really play when he put his mind to it.
Pippen nowhere to be seen. He kinda hit the skids (.450 TS%) in the finals.

We pity the fools who won MVP between 1987 and 1997, and who then met Jordan in the playoffs.
Magic was awesome, but Pippen was his equal, and Jordan was from another planet.

Re: All-Playoff Teams

Post by Crow »

Between 2005 and 2011 an average of exactly 1 guy made the top 10 on xyz per season with a TS% below 55% (I selected to look at just top 10 instead of all top 15 listed to simplify it a bit). From 1989 and 2004 (the defensive era?) the average was 2.75. Easier recently to be a top performer on xyz by being a star scorer? Or less guys shining very brightly thru the sum of other contributions because of a shift to a climate less friendly to tough / strong guys who played good defense and rebounded well or fewer guys with high talent for & effort applied to doing that role very very well?

Between 2005 and 2011 an average of about 2.3 guys made 3.0 or over on xyz per season. From 1989 and 2004 it was about 2.05. A bit easier recently to be a 3+ xyz guy in the current climate for whatever set of reasons (rule changes, greater use of the 3 pt shot, changes in age profile, etc.) or more top level talent than before?

Between 2005 and 2011 an average of about 2.85 guys of the top 5 guys on xyz were 20% or over on assist% per season. From 1989 and 2004 it was 2.75.

Between 2005 and 2011 an average of about 2.3 guys of the top 5 guys on xyz were 10% or over on reb% per season. From 1989 and 2004 it was 3.3.

Between 2005 and 2011 an average of about 3.6 guys of the top 5 guys on xyz were 25% or over on usage% per season. From 1989 and 2004 it was about 3.1.

The profile of top 5 or 10 performers on xyz between these 2 defined eras have changed in some notable ways. Since 2005 the top performers are more likely to have high usage and / or strong TS% and may pass a bit more. They are less likely to be strong rebounders. Perhaps a full accounting on the top 15 (or 25 or 50) would tell a somewhat different story.

Lakers eke out the title, and almost unnoticed a first-round out has an epic performance.

Noah only played 3 games but had a winshares per 48 minutes of .345. Jame was second best at .284 and Durant was third with .23.

Small minute sample but really only 2 guys had a better ws/48 in the playoffs in the last 32 years- LeBron and Hakeem.

Wonder what he posts next season. Hadn't been above .200 previously in the playoffs but did it 2 regular seasons in a row.

Marc Gasol was the 4th and last player who played 25+ minutes per game in the playoffs who was over .200 winshares per 48. Only about 5% of all minute qualified players achieved this.

Over the last 21 years the average was been about 6 per year over .200, so this season saw 1/3rd less than average.

Only a bit more than 1 per year over .250 ws/48 on average. Had two this year with Noah.

In the regular season, close to 25% of minute qualified players were better than .150 ws/48. In the playoffs it was close to just 20%. A good number of all stars and "superstars" did not achieve this level in the playoffs. http://bkref.com/tiny/jeooq

In the regular season, close to 25% of minute qualified players were better than .150 ws/48. In the playoffs it was close to just 20%.
This is normal in most years.
Everyone's regular season average opponent is close to .500 W%, or .50 WS per team per game.
Playoff opponents are on average around .625. But in playoffs, they total .50 WS per game.

Players and teams in playoffs therefore average only about 80% (.500/.625) of what they averaged in the regular season, in WS/48.
