Team salary by position (opening salvo)

Post by Crow »

There are 7 teams who are scheduled to pay $30+ million in salary next season to guys listed as guards- nets, pelicans, celtics, clippers, lakers, warriors, raptors.

8 teams are doing the same with forwards- kings, knicks, blazers, thunder, bulls, pacers, celtics, timberwolves.

Only team to exceed $30 mil on listed centers is the nets.

Nets and celtics are only teams to exceed $30 mil on two groups.

Team spending by position

Post by Crow »

Using data from about 10 days ago, I see that team spending by position for the league is almost equally distributed: 39% for guards, 40% for listed forwards and 21% for centers. The 10 biggest spending teams emphasize forwards the most at 41.5% and guards the least compared to middle and low 10. The middle 10 spend the most on guards at almost 41%. I expected to see more variation by position and spending tier.

The elite 8 in last playoffs are spending a bit more on guards than forwards (39% to 36%) and the relative most on centers (25%). Lottery teams spending most on forwards(44%) but least on centers 16% (trying more small ball?)

Elite 8 average $75 mil payroll right now. First round losers, $66 mil. Last time lottery teams, $53 mil so far.

Amongst elite 8, the 4 biggest % spent on centers are all in the east. At forward and guard there are 2 teams from each conference in top 4 spenders.

Team spending within positions or player types would be a logic next step for league, conference, spending tier and performance tier.
