Andrew Wiggins' improvement after New Years is corroborated in his b-r.com game log:

Code: Select all

Wiggins mpg TS% TRb% Ast% Stl% TO% ORtg
- Dec27 31.0 .474 7.2 8.0 1.6 12.9 92
Dec30 - 39.1 .572 8.4 11.9 2.2 10.2 113
After 900 NBA minutes, his eW/484 was about .46
After 1173 min, it's at .61
So, in these last 274 min (7 G), his e484 = 1.10 -- a better than avg NBA player.

At the same time, Jusuf Nurkic started getting 20+ mpg:

Code: Select all

Nurkic mpg TS% TRb% Ast% Stl% Blk% TO% ORtg DRtg
- Dec28 11.4 .495 20.1 7.7 2.5 4.8 18.8 91 97
Dec29 - 22.8 .576 18.7 8.9 2.9 10.0 9.7 113 93
He's had 19 blocks in 137 min., or 5 per 36.

Well Wiggins is making me feel bad about where I rated him, though I do think he's doing it in a Rudy Gay/Paul George-like smooth finesse style more than an unstoppable physical force - which is fine but could make him susceptible to falling back % wise at some point.

Well, Paul George is listed at 6-9 and 220; Rudy Gay 6-8 and 230; Andrew Wiggins 6-8 and 200. So if he's even as physical as those guys, that is something.
He's listed as SG; George shows as SG for 2 yrs, then SF for 2; Gay as SF throughout.

As rookies, Wiggins holds his own, at this point: http://bkref.com/tiny/MrzYk
And they were also about a year older.

Of the 3, Wiggins has the best 3fg%, Ast%, TO%, and Usg%; the worst Reb%, Blk%, DBPM; medium on about everything else.
All 3 have PER in the 12.4 - 13.0 range.

Gay's rookie year was with a -4.4 Grizz team; George's Pacers were -1.4; these Wolves are -8.7

I just noticed his monster game last night. Now his 14/15 splits look like this:

Code: Select all

Wiggins mpg TS% TRb% Ast% Stl% TO% ORtg
- Dec27 31.0 .474 7.2 8.0 1.6 12.9 92
Dec30 - 38.6 .591 8.6 12.9 1.9 9.7 117

I've been thinking about how if a player like Marcus Smart came into the league 10-15 years ago his stats may have been very different and more likely to win ROY. Stevens has him used as a 3 and D role player (which he's doing well at) but an old school coach would've been more into the "we need a guy to create his own shot! Who's our 4th quarter scorer!!!" type of mentality. Right now Smart is taking like 8 3s for every 16-23 jumper while Wiggins who is being coached in an old school style is taking .6 3s for every 16-23 jumper, despite a similar 3pt shooting stroke as Smart so far this year. Smart in a past era could very well have been told to "create" as many off the dribble midrange shots as he can leading to lower efficiency but higher ppg

If rookies take less and less midrange shots it could lead to a weak crop of PPG and ROY contenders on a long term basis. Not only that but most of these players come into the league used to being high volume shooters. If you take a guy who's had the ball in his hands all game and make him an off ball spot up shooter he's just not as used to it, thus he could end up learning his specialist game in the NBA at a slower rate than players like MCW and Wiggins who came into the league playing an identical style to what they did in college. Therefore you end up with a lot of guys who not only are scoring a lower ppg but a low efficiency too

Looks like Nerlens continues to climb, driven primarily by his improving scoring efficiency. It seems doubtful he'll be able to overtake Mirotic or Wiggins this year though. Galloway and Clarkson definitely helping this class out with their increased roles.

How do these current 2014/15 rookies compare to the sophomores' numbers this year? I suspect last year's leader MCW has taken a huge hit with the decreased steals, worse shooting efficiency, and increased turnovers.

eWins says MCW was a bit above NBA avg last year and again this year. His TS% is down from .480 to .450, which is significant but not huge. Both his Ast and his TO are up about 23% this year -- which is to say he's gotten another 2.0 Ast and 0.7 TO per100. Is that an even tradeoff?

It's a thankless job to "carry" a terrible team. Sixers with even fewer scoring options this year, somebody had to take shots.
Only players to avg 14-5-7 in any of the last 6 seasons: LeBron, Westbrook, Harden, M C-W.
