Player PER vs. League PER Questions

Post by BasketDork »

I know this may be a silly question to experts, but I like calculating things, in both the real world, and fictitious realm. When calculating a season's league PER, as opposed to an individual player, what changes? As the statistic calls for player, team, and league-wide numbers. Is there anything you leave out? Im not interested in debating PER's accuracy or anything, just the correct method of calculating league PER. Thanks guys!

League PER is defined as 15.0, and player PER are adjusted to force that result.

Then in playoffs, player PER are again adjusted so that all teams/players (minutes weighted) sum to 15.0
This may seem counter-intuitive, as playoff teams would have had >15 PER in the season. Avg is still avg, though, within a given arena.

Thats the method I follow to the T..So, when calculating lgPER, player, team and league inputs are all League stats?
Examples:
Step 1: 3PM+(2/3*AST), meaning a particular player's 3pt FGM and AST
Step 2: (2-factor*(TmAST/TmFGM))*FG, meaning assists for players team, team's FGM, and individual player's FGM,

In Step 1, figuring lgPER, is that league 3ptFGM & assists then?
In Step 2, figuring lgPER, is that league assists and league field goals then?

Am I slow or something here?

Your understanding sounds the same as mine.

Mike's comment about playoff PER was newsworthy to me.
