Hi Folks,
I am using this formula to calculate team possessions.
Possessions= 0.5 x ((Tm FGA + 0.44 x Tm FTA - 1.07 x (Tm ORB / (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)) x (Tm FGA - Tm FGM) + Tm TOV) + (Opp FGA + 0.44 x Opp FTA - 1.07 x (Opp ORB / (Opp ORB + Tm DRB)) x (Opp FGA - Opp FGM) + Opp TOV))
My question is when I am entering Opp DRB and Tm DRB is that total DRB (Including team DRB) or just the Defensive rebounds assigned to the players?
Thanks for the help
Rachel

Re: Calculating Team Possessions
Some rebounds are TEAM rebounds, and arent counted as individual rebounds that are assigned to a specific player, therefore the sum of individual rebounds for a teams players never adds up to the team's TOTAL rebounds. If youre looking to calculate a teams possessions, Id go with a teams total # of REB's.

Re: Calculating Team Possessions
Are team rebounds always defensive rebounds? Is it true that team rebounds should be counted towards Tm DRB because I can't find any reference to that in Basketball on Paper? Also, if you look at a box score at basketball-reference, you won't find any mention of team rebounds and a pace calculation is based on sum of individual rebounds only.
Re: Calculating Team Possessions
I get the impression that a team shooting the first or non-last fta(s) automatically get a team offensive rebound but I prefer not to mess with them at all.
Re: Calculating Team Possessions
And what is your take on counting team rebounds towards Tm DRB in formula for team possession?
Re: Calculating Team Possessions
I didn't want to venture a guess; but for team possession, I guess I might split team rebounds into parts towards Tm DRB and Tm ORB in proportion to the player level data off. / def. split.
Rachel, what are you using team possessions for and how does it look when you calculate it the various different ways?
