Thanks to Harvey Pollack (RIP) who tracked it going way back, we have some plus minus numbers for Malone's prime in Philly, and some guys from RealGM calculated on/off:

Code: Select all

YEAR	MIN	ORTG	DRTG	NET
1982-83	2922	8,2	-7,4	15,6
1983-84	2613	10,4	7,1	3,3
1984-85	2957	18,8	-2,8	21,7
1985-86	2706	8,9	1,8	7,2
What a terrific offensive player. RIP Moses Malone.

In a 14 year interval, only one other player had even half as many offensive rebounds as Moses.

Code: Select all

1977-1990 OReb TReb
Moses Malone 5992 14483
Robert Parish 3497 11130
Jack Sikma 2434 10375
Artis Gilmore 2639 9161
Kareem A-J 2222 8896
Bill Laimbeer 2423 8737
Buck Williams 2838 8376
Larry Bird 1658 8031
Last season, Andre Drummond led the league with 437 OReb. Only one other player (D Jordan) had even 300.
Moses had 7 seasons with as many as 437, and 16 years he had >300.

Moses has the top 3 OReb seasons since 1977. Just 8 players have gotten 400 in a season since then.
These players' best OReb year:

Code: Select all

1977-2015 year tm OReb
Moses Malone 1979 Hou 587
Dennis Rodman 1992 Det 523
Jayson Williams 1998 NJN 443
Andre Drummond 2014 Det 440
Hakeem Olajuwon 1985 Hou 440
Larry Smith 1981 GSW 433
Kevin Willis 1992 Atl 418
Charles Barkley 1989 Phl 403
With 2000 points and 1000 rebounds in a year: Moses did it 4 times; Olajuwon, Robinson, and Shaq, twice each; Duncan once.

In "standardized equivalents", Moses ranks 3rd all-time in NBA/ABA rebounds, RS+PO

Code: Select all

equivalent Rebounds per36
21,378 Wilt 14.7
19,717 Russell 14.6
19,310 Moses 13.2
18,926 Kareem 10.6
18,451 Duncan 12.7
18,243 Karl Malone 10.9
17,438 Garnett 11.6
16,935 Shaq 12.2
16,861 Parish 11.4
16,335 Gilmore 11.9
Moses played about 11% more minutes than Russell to get almost as many eReb.
By 'standardized' I mean per 44 rebounds per team, per game; both for eReb and per36.
In ePoints, he ranks 16th; and in equivalent everything, he ranks 12th.
He only got 7.5% of his career minutes in playoffs, which is lowest among the top 20 in eTotals.

this is a rockets/spurs game from 78-79 when he was just 24 years old:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ8lbWz1sBg

wow he looks thin, almost as thin as george gervin - was listed at 6-10 and just 220 lb then - but set the season record of 578 off rebs that year...

that season jabbar was listed at 7-2/235 lb, gilmore at 7-2/240, swen nater 6-11/250, rich kelley 7-0/230, robert parish 7-0/230, darryl dawkins 6-11/250, marvin webster 7-0/230...

in 86-87 (age 32) i see malone listed at 6-10/260...

was all-NBA 7 straight years from 78-79 to 84-85, again in 86-87, 4 times 1st team, and was as durable as any player - from 78-79 to 89-90 (12 years) played more total regular season minutes (35164) than any other player, scored the 2nd most total points (next to only alex english)...

This is a good workout.

When Moses retired in 1995, he was 4th alltime in NBA regular season Win Shares -- behind only Kareem, Wilt, and Oscar --
http://bkref.com/tiny/fFNdG
-- ahead of Russell, West, Magic, Bird, and everyone else.

After 6 years in Houston (1977-82), he was #3 on the franchise list in Win Shares -- just behind Cal Murphy and Rudy T. He was also 3rd in points and 1st in rebounds.

His 4 seasons in Philly (1983-86) placed him 12th in WS; 10th in Reb, 13th in Pts.

Just 2 years in Washington, and he was 20th in WS and Pts, 14th in Reb

He was also 20th in Hawks' WS for 3 seasons there (1989-91); 18th in Reb, 22nd in Pts

That's 4 teams for which he was (arguably) among their top 20 franchise players when he left them.
Oh, he's 10th in WS for the ABA franchise LA/Anaheim/Utah Stars.
