New NBA analytics website

Post by watto84 »

Hi everyone,

Come check out my new NBA analytics site at www.zigzaganalytics.com my first post looks at why NBA teams should look at avoiding timeouts after being scored on for scoring efficiency.

A quick bit of background on myself, I have 10+ years data management/analyst experience at MARS INC (Makers of Snickers, Skittles etc) and Toyota. I also have 10+ years professional basketball experience playing in Australia.

Will keep you updated with any new stuff.

Nice trend catch on first article. I hadn't seen that mentioned before. In addition to posting here, you might tweet to some of the media you like / respect to make it even easier for them to notice and hopefully cite / reference to help raise your visibility. Give us reminder links to future stuff too. Hard to get many folks to small blogs without leading them to it until they know it is worth regular checking. Even with a positive expectation, there is inertia about checking more sites to be overcome.

To dig deeper, is this trend new to Warriors this season? What did they do last season? Was there a positive or negative return on calling a timeout for them when they did it? Are they alone today in never or even rarely calling a time out? Who is closest and furthest from this practice? You accept and present the characture of Brad Stevens as a out of timeout genius but what are the facts?

Does the playoffs have the same call frequencies and result trends or notably different? What did Kerr do last playoffs?

Knowing this basic trend what should opposing teams do differently on that next defensive play or the next offensive play after that?

Where do the Warriors timeouts saved by this behavior get used? Is there added value there? What are the best and worst types and times of timeouts based on immediate or longer term return? Is it possible to break time outs after being scored on into subcategories based on time and game score situation to analyze if there are sub-trends and appropriate strategies for them beyond the league average trend? Is the 4th quarter different or late or very late forth quarter different? Is it the same trend when ahead by a lot or little or behind by a lot or little? Does the analysis look different if you switch from immediate scoring efficiency to increased / decreases win expectancy and post-game win impact analysis?

Does the average trend trend pull equally from good / bad teams, coaches with lots / little head coaching experience, with / without NBA, professional, D1 or any college playing experience vs. not? How correlated is this coaching behavior to what the first or last coach they coached and / or played under did? In general how closely do coaches mimic their mentors? Where do they diverge most / least and with what result trends? Can you reasonably use information about degree of mimicry and results from other assistants elevated to head coach to help predict degree of success for the next one? Can you find clues about degree of likely mimicry from the assistant before being elevated? From observation or formal testing? Does the mentor have an accurate expectation on this worth relying on?

This one observation about timeout behavior and results could lead to comprehensive time out behavior and results analysis and as much coaching behavioral development as you are interested in pursuing.

Celtics / Stevens 23rd on after timeout efficiency here (any kind of timeout) https://m.reddit.com/r/torontoraptors/c ... _timeouts/ Is he any better after being scored on?

Thanks for taking the time to reply and sharing your insights. I tried to keep it as simple as possible with the first post as I'm conscious of going into 2 much detail and readers becoming disinterested quickly with 2 much analysis.

Will post anything else I come up with over the coming weeks.
