High School Advanced Stats

Post by shock3 »

I'm going to track advanced stats from AAU events this spring and summer. I was wondering what were the essential stats to be tracked? I know PER has basically been proven useless for the most part. Here's what I was planning...

TS%, eFG, FTr, ORB%, DRB%, TRB%, AST%, STL%, BLK%, TOV%, USG%, ORTG, DRTG

Anything that I'm missing that would be good for player evaluation?

3pt rate (frequency as a % of total fgas), % FG that were assisted for the shooter, 2pt Fg%, A/TO.
Lots of stats could be expressed per minute or per possession or as % of team total (like what is done at draftexpress (example http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kay ... 928/stats/ ) You could pace adjust if you were interested in leveling further.

Yeah, I was debating if I should do per minute stats to level basic stats.

Hey, do you know reliable sources for good AAU stats? I can easily do projection work from AAU, but have difficulty finding complete enough data (full box scores stats for every team in any given tourney) to bother with it.

If I remember correctly from last year, Adidas were good. UA would have been great but they didn't publish O/D rebounds just a total rebounds for each player. Then Nike used Game Changer. I believe those were good but were spread out and needed to follow a link in the team's administrator page on GC.com.

adidas has these for each game - https://basketball.exposureevents.com/5 ... ut=pdf&r=8

I'd be happy to help if you want to work on any of this together.

Having decent advanced stats/player ranking tools for highschool/AAU is probably worth millions of dollars to top college programs.

Wouldn't past data be necessary for projecting players? I think that will be hard to find except for the top players. Going forward stat tracking should be easier...as long as the stat keeper is doing a good job. That will be a big if.

Yes, it would.

Now, the fact I rate every college player, & can project anyone to the NBA (based on player type & such) - I could probably get away with just a few past seasons of data to try to have enough data to create conversions for any AAU grouping to project to college & beyond. I would assume the Adidas AAU has had fairly similar overall talent year to year the last few years.

At first glance, it looks like you'd have to go with some kind of OCR.

Under Armour isn't posting minutes played for their circuits. Does that mean I'm SOL for stats that use individual/team minutes played?

Seems like it, though you might be able to make a decent rough guess of minutes distribution from shots, rebounds, fouls. You could write them and ask for minutes, for the past or going forward.

I have emailed the director of media, but he has not responded to me. Synergy is breaking down their games, so maybe that is part of the reason they don't have it posted?
