Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
C Wallace, worst on raw team +/- at -25 pts / 48 min in pres-season? Lousy shooting. Curious.
Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
18 man roster. 11 spots given to guys 6-6 and under.
In tonight's game, 2 bigs for sure injured. 2 more don't play for whatever reason. 2 foul out. Last one plays poorly.
Squeek by in double OT.
Unusual game. But room to question roster balance.
17th and 18th spots given to guards.
Offensive rebounding lost by 4 and was far worse early. Opposing big goes for 39 pts.
Size almost won tonight.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Game 1, 3 of 4 most used lineups positive and +12 combined. 12 of the smaller 16 negative or neutral for a -11 combined and a close to -40pts / 48 min. rate.
12 of the 14 negative pairs over 2 minutes (out of 43 total pairs) had Dort, Caruso and / or Holmgren. As a trio they were -31 pts / 48 min in 11 minutes and the worst over 7 minutes.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Thunder called for 27 fouls in game 1, tying last regular season high and tying 3rd highest in playoffs. 35% above last regular season average and 22% above playoff average. Double overtime would account for a 20+% elevation.
First quarter tonight is well ahead of game 1 PF rate per minute.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Tied for most fouls called on Thunder in almost 11 years at 33. 37 on Pacers.
But another double OT win.
But another double OT win.
Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Not a single lineup used in both games? Bizarre but apparently the case.
Dort- Holmgren was only pair in 20 most used that was negative and only slightly. Then over half of the remaining 43 were negative and usually awful. Tale of two parts. 23 straight positive trios then the negatives come pretty heavy (60% negative the rest of thd way). 140 trios already.
A mix of chaos with good selectivity within the top.
135 quads. 11 of 12 most used non-negative but then almost 80 negatives the rest of the way.
43 5 man lineups. About 40% positive, 60% not. The negatives start to show up quicker here.
Issues completing a group increase with unit size.
Slightly less than half of lineups over 2 minutes, slightly more not.
With big four of SGA, Dort, Holmgren and Hartenstein, almost all minutes without Hartenstein were negative. More mixed for the others.
They won, but barely. Probably could have been easier with more concentration. Now and in long-run.
Lots of players missing. Return of JDub would be a force for greater concentration but eventual availability of all would likely encourage more randomness.
Last season after 2 games, only 15% of lineups were used twice. Not much more than this season. Overall the frequency of units was modestly less but still very diverse.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Thru 2 games, Thunder have a median offensive efficiency (2 pts below mean) and 6th place defense. 13th best unadjusted net rating. 5th lowest pace, 7th highest FT rate. Mildly above median 3pt rate. Median TS% but 7th lowest efg%. 20th on Off Reb%, 22nd on Def Reb%. Only 9th on opponent turnover rate. 5th best opponent efg%. 4th lowest own turnovers rate. 10th highest opponent FT / FGA, 4th highest own rate.
A mixed bag.
10th youngest by minutes weighted average age.
7 players currently on injured list.
Just noticed they added Zoey Vernon as an Assistant Coach. Former college basketball player / PhD.
Below median on shots at rim and within 10 feet. 7th lowest layup attempt frequency. Above average on long 2s. Very close to average FG% from every distance except terrible from 3- 26%, 4th worst, so far.
Plenty of room for improvement in many areas.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Thunder 6 most used lineups averaging +28 pts / 48 min. Everything else averaging -7.4. 41% of minutes for 6 most used, 59% to the poorly performing on average rest.
55 lineups used. Only 8 in 2 games, none in all 3.
Mitchell - Dort is least good pair in 20 most used but still slightly positive. From there over half are mostly terrible to horrendous.
Terrible team results for deep bench generally.
3 strong BPMs then 13 from neutral to awful. Last season it was 13 positive, 6 negative. Dort at -7 4. Youngblood and Barnhizer awful. Two way but mainly on offense. Dieng with the worst BPM at -18.
3pt fg% rises to almost 30% but falls to 2nd worst.
Holmgren with 2nd consecutive large FT rate increase. And 2nd straight significant A/TO decline. And 2nd straight decline in at the rim FG%. Mid-range and 3pt at career best.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Is the end nearing for Dieng on Thunder?
In 2 of 4 games. 20 minutes. 0 pts, 3 rebounds total.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
5 games, 77 different lineups. An average of 15 brand new every game. Probably going to use more than last season.
Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Available to Thunder in 2024 draft but not selected include DaRon Holmes, Da Silva, Mogbo, Filipowski, Ware, Post, McCain...
Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
60 of 77 lineups have been used 3 minutes or less. The average lineup has been used 1.3 of 5 games.
Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
2 most used lineups have gone negative.
All but biggest lineup are dinks. 1 lineup with moderate test rate and 89 dinks.

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Thunder 23rd on assists. Down from 12th last season.
#1 in defensive rebounds? 7th by def reb rate.
25th on own fg%.
1st on own turnovers rate.
4 top 10 factors, 4 middle 10. The bottom is better than last season.
Net margin down 30% from last season at the moment.
Dort terrible BPM, far worse than for any previous season.
Wallace, Caruso, Wiggins and Hartenstein also down some.
Two most used lineup are around 6 and 5 minutes per game, averaged across the full set of games. This compares to 4 and 2 last season. 5 most used from cumulative 9 minutes per game to 17. Will the greater concentration persist? Was it intentional? If intentional, was last season acknowledged as way too low?

Re: Thunder lineup analysis and other commentary
Alternate reality check:
2011-12 Westbrook Harden Durant Ibaka core
could have been
Harden Durant Batum Love.
By BPM at that time Love way better than Westbrook and Batum equal to Ibaka on BPM and better on offense including on 3pt shooting. 2012 Thunder lost to Heat because of shooting in general, 3pt shooting, FTAs and rebounding. Both Love and Batum were far better 3pt shooters then. Love way better getting to line and rebounding.
I was for big for Love over Westbrook.
Lots of alternative Thunder realities with Jokic, Giannis, Curry, J Butler, I Thomas, Draymond, Middleton, Gobert, Capella, K Anderson, Crowder, J Grant, L Nance, J Allen, Hartenstein, B Clarke, Gafford, Quickley, Bane, Sengun, Aldama, Jalen Johnson, Lively, Camara, DaRon Holmes, McCann, S James, Kalkbrenner and others.
