Please Do This Study

Post by Kathoro »

Against >=0.500 Teams
Y-axis: Thunder Points per Posession
X-axis: Durant's shot fraction of the Durant+Westbrook shots

Repeat for <0.500 Teams

It looks like an interesting study, but all the information is out there for you to do it if you want.

I'll meet you part way this time. Here is the raw data.

You can calculate the shot ratio, sort by team record and graph, I hope. I'd like to see the results of your proposed study.

Time is fairly important to most everyone.

Asking someone else to do all the work for you is fairly unlikely to succeed.

You get lucky to a degree, this time.

I won't do the charting. But I found that against .500+ teams, the ratio of Durant shots as a percent of KD +RW shots is pretty much constant at a bit under 51% in wins and in losses. Against sub .500 teams, KD's shot percentage is about 53.5% in losses and 48.5% in wins.

For both opponent groups OKC's team offensive efficiency is 10+ points better in wins than losses. In 5 elite wins his shot share was 49%. In 3 elite losses it was only 46%.

Against .500+ teams, for the top 10 games for KD shot percentage of the total from the two, the Thunder went 8-2. For the bottom 10 games, they went 7-3. This is a small sample overall but KD's shot percentage of the total from the two does not appear to a decisive factor in wins and losses against good teams.
But this doesn't consider FG%s or FTs.

How do you post a graph on this thing? I did the study and have the graph.

use the code, img or url functions in the reply window underneath the subject line.

i am not good at doing that, part of the reason I didn't do the graph.

It might be interesting to also see more generally the correlation of player direct scoring impact (using Evan's metric for that or something else) with team offensive efficiency game to game. Who has the highest correlations and the lowest?

I might get to it later but I have probably spent enough time on basketball today.

What I am interested in now is the following. You know how that sloan study showed the offensive rebound percentages as a function of shot distance? Well I think there might be a defensive effect that counteracts the low rebound rates on mid-range jumpers...

Y-Axis: Average immediate fast break points allowed
X-Axis: Distance of shot missed

I considered doing something similar with Durant's usage instead of % of Durant+Westbrook FGAs. Never got around to it though

The code function is supposed to be straightforward, I am told just select and copy the graph in between these code elements Or if you can save it to google docs, it can give you a link that the public can see if you request it.

Have you tried either? if you are still having trouble, maybe someone can help.
