Team shot distributions

Post by Crow »

2013-14

Team Rank on inside shot raw freq. FTArate 3pt rate

Hou 3 1 1
LAC 6 2 5
MIA 15 4 7
OKC 11 5 25
IND 27 11 15
POR 17 19 9
SAS 22 30 18

I only like 2-4 of these shot distributions. The team shot distribution may be a leading reason for 2014 playoff disappointment.

PHI 1 21 17
Fast pace makes them look better when using per game data (first column, done that way for quick retrieval) than they are using rates (the later two columns).

For full 2013 playoffs Miami averaged 26 inside shots, 24 FTAs, 21 3 pt attempts per game.
Spurs averaged 23.5 inside shots, 15.5 FTAs, 22 3 pt attempts per game.
There are other things that matter on offense but Miami got more high efficiency shots overall; and that had to help, perhaps especially in tough close games.

2012 playoffs Miami averaged 24.5 inside shots, 31 FTAs, 20.5 3 pt attempts per game.
OKC averaged 27.5 inside shots, 24.5 FTAs, 19 3 pt attempts per game.
Miami had a modest edge, though a different mix.

(Of course more research could be done to check into this further. Maybe later.)
