Rockets to hire D'Antoni

Post by Crow »

33 wins below .500 in last 6 seasons. Zero playoff games won. Legendary low interest in defense. Only good (even just non-terrible) defense in last 6 seasons was one season with Mike Woodson, Tyson Chandler and a lot of tough vets. Whack hire, imo. Unless they need help getting D Howard out the door.

Bzdelik for defensive coordinator? Last was an NBA head coach 12 years ago. 8 of 11 college seasons below .500 despite presumably typical pre-conference softies. Current employer Griz went another direction.

Last to decide. And they end up with a stubborn 65 year old on a long bad streak?

I don't think Pringles is a necessarily a bad defensive coach; he had pretty bad defensive players.
I view almost all NBA coaches as being neutral (and if there is a difference, I don't think we're in a good position to evaluate them, unless they're obviously terrible) and interchangeable. The big thing is how they fit with the roster/team.

I suspect he'll be able to co-exist with Moreyball prettywell, which I'm sure played a role in his hire.

D'Antoni's team wins were below expected in at least 4 of last 6 seasons, unclear in one split season and positive in one.

Will wait n see what happens in Houston but doubt he pushes them to very positive results. I'd guess the 4 year deal sees termination before completion. Unless they keep him in the saddle to ride out a tank, but even then he probably gets jettisoned eventually.

Another team stat that could be considered in studying coaches is w-l in close games. 3pts or less. It is probably fairly random, certainly is small sample and is not simple to interpret but it is data for consideration. D'Antoni in last 6 seasons was plus 1. Brad Stevens is -4 in 3 seasons. fwiw to you, if anything. At minimum you know neither are demonstrating recent greatness by this measure. Stevens and the Celtics ranked 22nd on this for last regular season.
